BC-BBN--All-Stars-Rolen-Ensberg,0238

Rolen out of All Star game; replaced by Ensberg

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott

Rolen pulled out of Tuesday's All Star game to rest a problematic

right shoulder and was replaced on the National League roster by

Houston's Morgan Enberg.

"I came to the ballpark with my bags packed for Detroit,"

Rolen said following the Cardinals' 4-3 victory over the San

Francisco Giants on Sunday. "I talked with the medical staff and

they said it was best to rest it for four days."

Rolen, who was elected to the starting lineup by fan voting, was

1-for-10 with an RBI in the three-game series against the Giants.

"We finally persuaded Rolen to take the game off," St. Louis

manager Tony La Russa said. "It gives him a chance to rest his

shoulder."

The Cardinals will still have five representatives in Detroit,

including shortstop David Eckstein and outfielder Jim Edmonds in

the starting lineup. Albert Pujols, who could be the NL's starting

designated hitter, and pitchers Chris Carpenter and Jason

Isringhausen were also selected.

"I see being voted in as an honor and a sign of respect,"

Rolen said. "Me not going hopefully will not be taken as a sign of

disrespect."

Rolen hit .251 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 50 games in the

first half. Ensberg is hitting .290 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs.

I would assume that ramirez will now be the starter to.

I dunno, looking at his stats, I would say he has as strong a case as Clemens and Willis. I'm not sure who I would choose, but I am leaning towards Clemens.

YES!!! ARam -- ALL STAR STARTER

Lets see a few 5-3's to show the world ARam knows how to play D now.

The 3B starter hasn't been officially announced but we can pretty much write Aram in as he is the top vote getter among players and 2nd best among fan voting.

Congrats also to Ensberg as he is also deserving. You would have to think that personal performance (and not just health) figured heavily into Rolen's decision to back out.

Also found this article, Carpenter is the starter for the game.

St Lou P-D

Carp's been good, but this is a joke.

Carpenter will fade, IMO.

He's going to have to put together the complete good year before I'll believe he can actually do it.

I don't think there's any way you can say that you can say either guy deserves it over Clemens, unless you want to talk wins. Congrats to Ensberg, who's had a great first half.

Rolen is a class act. I think the fact that he knows his numbers aren't that great was also weighing on mind when he made that decision. (Just my opinion) He knows there are other guys who are a little more deserving, so he made a choice. Ensberg deserves to be there, so it's good to see he didn't get snubbed afterall. (Although Rolen's defense would've been nice)

The NL starter isn't really too much of a factor I don't think. These guys are all going to get playing time. Carp's numbers definitely give him an argument to be the starter. It really could've went to any of four guys: Carpenter, Clemens, Willis, and Pedro Martinez. With Pedro dropping out, I still don't envy La Russa's situation. That is one tough choice.

He will fade but a career .270 hitter will probably continue to hit .370

Now imagine if Nomar wouldn't have gotten hurt. We likely would have had 3/4ths of the starting NL infield.

Yea what's he talking about? Eckstein Rules Nomar.

Jesus. How many Card fans are on here lately? Dont you guys have your own place?

The NL shortstops are terribly weak and Nomar would actually really win it easily. Its not something to roll your eyes over. Eckstein's a little scrappy guy and i like him a lot, buts he not an all-star.

Cards fans shouldn't have anything to complain about. There's plenty of red at the ASG.

Don't forget that also, despite being injured, Nomar was leading the vote for quite a while anyway. Playing, there's little doubt Nomar would've won the popular vote to start the game.
