"His slide has been full of line drives,'' he said. "He is probably hitting more line drives at people than anyone on our team. It's different if a guy is popping up or striking out. But he has been hitting the ball hard two or three times a night with nothing to show for it. To me, that's more of an unfortunate period than a slide.''

17-117 since June 6th and it's all bad luck. Those of us who hoped to see Cedeno get more time will have to wait.

I haven't seen Niefi hit a line drive since mid-June. I have seen him hit lazy fly balls, weak ground outs and pop outs, though.

I haven't seen him take a walk, though.

He has had some bad luck at times in this stretch and he has hit some hard line drives, but they've been right at someone.

Unfortunately, even if he didn't have bad luck he would only be hitting .215 in this stretch rather than .145.

What exactly would you want Dusty to say, "Neifi is quite honestly the worst starting shortstop in the majors right now, I'm only starting him because my other option is a rookie...." What Dusty said is one of the main reasons he is known as a player's manager - shows confidence and tries to keep things positive.

Or maybe, he could just that he is going to see how Ronny works out.

I don't recall seeing any comments like this during Dubois's stint as starting LF, or during Patterson's slide.

That could be because both of those two's slides were chop-full of strikeouts. Tough to hit those hard and right at someone.

Dusty repeatedly used the "hard luck" argument for keeping Shawn Estes in the rotation when everyone was clamoring for Estes' removal. This is the same situation, since Dusty surely knows that pressure is mounting to give Cedeno a chance.

I'm not talking about that specifically, as Dusty is obviously full of it when talking about Neifi being unlucky. My question is why he doesn't seem to come to the rescue of the other struggling players, i.e Dubois and Patterson, even if his defenses are entirely untrue.

Ughh. It's like he is watching a different game than everyone else.

But I guess in Dusty's reality -- where weakly hit pop-ups are screaming line drives and walks are base clogging rally killers -- he's bound to have a "unique" perspective on things.

I translate this as, Neifi isn't striking out much, so he's just getting unlucky that he's not getting hits when he makes contact.

If Neifi can follow the Estes pattern does that mean we finally get to see Ronny in September? Only this time we'll be 12 back of the wild card by then and Neifi will have dropped to a 180/210/280 line.

You know, perhaps some should just stop reading Baker quotes altogether. You haven't gotten accustomed to his quotes, yet? How long will it take to realize he says bs to reporters just to show has has his players' backs? He's not going to say what I want him to say, "Neifi is unlucky because he doesn't have the talent to be a good offensive player." And, no, Dusty, you're wrong, most of Perez's contact are either weak pop ups/outs or ground balls. I think it would be less stressful if those who read Baker's quotes and get upset (knowing he's going to make you upset) because they take them too seriously would just stop reading them.

Perez needs to be benched. It's that simple. Cedeno needs to play because we need to find out what we have in him before Nomar comes back. Hendry do us all a favor and get rid of Baker-boy.

That's true I suppose.

Both are about as meaningless.

agreed people shouldn't bother analyzing what the leader of the team says they should just not pay attention to anything the leader of the team says publicly

Can anybody find Neifi's LD%, especially if it is over the last month or two? It would be interesting to see how much it has decreased since his hot streak at the beginning of the year.

For the season, Neifi's LD% is 23.3 and babip is .269.

That's not a typo. For the season as a whole, Neifi has been unlucky. Whether or not he has been recently, I obviously don't know.

I don't think Neifi is unlucky. I do not care what BS Dusty is spewing , but neifi has been hiting weak popups recently. I recall hearing Pat say if neifi's early power surge has caused him to think of himself as a power hitter thus changing his approach and that in tuen leading to his proensity to pop up. Santo disagreed, but think Pat hit it on the head. His .265 BABIP is more a reflection of his weak-ass popups more than unluckiness.

Well, it's basically exactly what you said, with one more word tacked on to the end. Makes sense to me.

I'd say Ronny is the unlucky one: A) He's sitting in favor of Neifi Perez and B) He actually is scorching the ball all over the field but not getting the hits (he only has 1 since being called up :(
