I think that this is Hendry's way of saying "screw you Dusty, we're gonna do things my way now."

If Hendry had a different way of doing things, they probably would have already been done. Neither Murton or Greenberg are going to be starting, I'd assume.

This doesn't make any sense at all. I'll wait to hear what Jim says, but I sense disaster. I don't like this one bit.

I'm with you. I hope I'm wrong but I see the kids getting hurt in this one.

No way Hendry is that daft when it comes to player development...something is up, big time.

I'm hoping you're right. If Murton and Greenberg rides the bench I'll be more than upset. *looking for his July 23rd tickets for Cubs/Cards at Busch*

And now he's going to hurt two other players by making the waste away on the bench? Simply amazing.

and tell me how you know they'll waste away on the bench?

this could be a precursor to dusty's firing, which would lead to young players actually having a chance to play.

I'm pretty surprised by this. Okay, that's an understatement. I'm amazed by this move.

I think it's pretty pointless, though, if Murton and Greenberg ride the pine next to Cedeno. I want to see all three of them get a real chance. None of this platoon garbage. An everyday chance. If that means Hendry has to fire Baker for that to happen, so be it.

Yeah, like I said earlier Jim has to know Baker won't start them. Only Dusty's firing would clear the way for that. IF Baker is to be canned, you'd think Jim would do it in person. Perhaps he'd meet him in Miami.....

.....I'm being overly optimistic.

There is a certain amount of "if you don't play the right way, you're going down to the minors" about this, but this is too out of left field for something else not to be happening.

He did it to Cedeno. Either both agreed that Ronny would sit on the bench or at the very minimum, he knew Dusty wasn't going to start him. But that doesn't matter. Just by calling him up hurt him.

At the minimum, Hendry absolutely has to know what he has for next season. Instead of seeing what he has in Patterson, Dubois, and Cedeno, the veterans are playing. And now he's going to hurt two other players by making the waste away on the bench? Simply amazing.

Ugh. I'm sure that he's flooded but I had better drop Matt a note of congrats.

Very much out of left field....

there is no way these guys play unless Hollandsworth and Burnitz are traded. It just doesn't make sense. This isn't a rebuilding team in September here folks. You don't bench Burnitz for Murton no matter how bad the team is doing. Besides, this isn't Burnitz's fault.

But despite the losing streak, isn't it early to pack it in and play the youth? This is a $100 million team. I can't see Hendry waving the white flag in the first week of July.

The Cubs have lost 8 games in a row. They are 4 games under .500. I agree that it's too early to throw in the towel, but it's not too early to see if these guys can give you a spark. Look, what we have right now isn't working. It's just not. The only "trade" that Hendry can make is with the farm, so he's making it.

The problem is that they probably won't get a chance to play.

We'll see what happens, but how would this indicate Dusty being fired? If Baker was going out, Dubois would stay and both Macias and Perez would sit or be released. If that doesn't happen, this is almost like the opposite.

My feeling is that Hendry and Baker had some sort of agreement about Cedeno's playing time, and Dusty didn't stick to it. Reserving judgement at least until tomorrow is in order, IMO.

Maybe Hendry is setting the stage for Baker's firing. Something like:

"I told you to play the kids, and you didn't. See you later. Thanks for 2003"

That's a good point. Perez and Macias are a couple of Baker's "dudes", and are probably only on the roster per Baker's request. If Baker is canned, those two can't be far behind.

Murton's a prototypical LF all the way. He doesn't have much of an arm to speak of. He's not going to be taking reps away from Burnitz in RF.

He needs to beat out Holla & company in LF.

Hendry is just replacing young guys with young guys at this point. I'm not optimistic that any managerial change is on the horizon. Had Hendry released Macias or Hollandsworth or Perez and replaced them with a youngun, then I'd start wondering. But, I see these moves as Hendry grasping at straws though he must know it won't be fruitful due to the bench factor. If Murton or Greenburg get starts in back to back games, or even in 2 of 3 games, I'll pass out.

All this is is a reaction to the Atlanta butt whipping.

Dubois wasn't performing. He got his shot for nearly a month and did nothing. I don't think Doobie had a future as a starter on the Cubs, regardless.

i know i read today or yesterday that cedeno said he was told he was going to be called up to start, not to sit.

But Hollandsworth has been our best outfielder for the past month. I dont see what putting Murton in there is going to do, really.

I'd just have to believe if Dusty has been going against Jim's desire for this long, something would have already been done. That leads me to think that they're close to seeing eye to eye.

I'm also quite worried as to what this will do to their (especially Murton's) trade value.

Right. And why should Baker play the youth when guys like Cedeno pinch hit and swing at the first pitch every time? His lack of confidence certainly rubs off.

Holla, Perez and Macias are good bench players, and Hendry knows that. What we need is a manager who keeps them there. Ifanything, I think releasing those three would be more of an indicator of Dusty staying than leaving. Either getting rid of baker or his toys makes sense. Doing both is pointless.

I have a feeling this will be a different team when I see them play at Busch two weeks from Friday...hoepfully different for the better.
