Season from hell with injuries. Was hoping no fractures but thats tough to see a way he comes back this year. The amount of injuries in modern sports just isn’t fair.

Fingers crossed. But do think the end result will be Bregman's year being done barring a major run. 

I don’t know if he’ll play again this year, but if you can play with it and not have vision issues in basketball, you should be able to do the same in baseball

I think it's a bit different. In basketball while it's quick, you don't have to force it under yet another protective device, all while an object that is literally 100mph travels *at* you and needing as much vision to see that little object. 

The sheer ability to get it to fit under a helmet without that further affecting you has to be an issue to begin with. 

We will see. If there's one player who can handle this, if it's possible and just pain management, it's Bregman.

I was looking for some examples of these types of injuries.  Kevin Pillar was hit in the face with a pitch, suffered multiple nasal fractures, underwent facial surgery, and returned to play exactly two weeks later.  He wore a face mask while in the field and running the bases, C flap helmet while batting.

These guys willingly play a game where they put their mostly exposed faces about 3 feet from the target area of a guy throwing 100 mph, I just can’t imagine this happening once every 30,000 games is going to put them off of something that they’ve been doing their whole career. 
 

The article below has 53 NBA players with facial fractures missing an average of 18 days. Which puts you in the back half of the NLDS. While I get the pessimistic view that seeing a 100 mph fastball is harder than following a basketball, there’s also a significantly lower chance of reinjury, so who knows.

I can see a possibility of him being back in right around 3 weeks, from the injury. My issue is, without him, I don’t see the Cubs playing that long. Obviously, they could. It is baseball, they are still a good team, and anything can happen. But IMO the reason he won’t play again this year is because the Cubs season will be over before the Cubs will clear him to play. It sucks that yet again the Cubs have to start the playoffs short handed.

Removing elite 3B defence from a team that needs elite defence to survive the worst pitching staff in baseball is a killer.

Yeah I mean, it's obviously a slippery slope but the the idea of replacing 5.2 fWAR Alex Bregman with (made up) 1.5 fWAR Matt Shaw over a 3-8 game stretch is...surmountable? I know I'm probably overly optimistic (or maybe overly 'the playoffs are a slot machine'), but this just doesn't change my math much. We were probably 55/45 in a three game set on Saturday, now we're like....53/47? And then we'll be underdogs against whoever we play next, but that's always been the case. 

And it's not just a Cubs thing. Luzurdo being potentially on the shelf or at least rusty is a much bigger blow.

I guess since he already posted that he’d be back I didn’t even consider that as a possibility.
