Is 7-9 realistic with the current roster? Even 5-11 seems like wishful thinking now.

Yes. Look at the schedule. It’s not like we’re playing the Brewers, Dodgers and Braves the next 16 games. We likely have one series against a good team that will be trying (Atlanta). Maybe 2 if Boston stays close to the Yankees and cares about HFA more than setting their pitching staff.

Does that mean we will go 7-9 or better? Of course not.

Right. The argument isn’t will they go 7-9, it is are we unrealistic to think they can. That answer is obviously no we are not.

I mean they lost the Mariners and Reds series a couple weeks ago. This bullpen is not immune to bad teams.

Ok. And they also just won a series against the Marlins and split a 4 game series against the team with the best record in the league.

Nobody is saying we’re not going to blow games against bad team. We’re talking about what is likely to happen.

I am really getting tired of bum ass relief pitchers getting to come in for 5-10 minutes and utterly destroy an otherwise fantastically played baseball game by all else involved. Just defeats the entire point of everything. You can’t enjoy high effort and good plays because you know some horsefeathers parasite is warming up in the pen the take a steamy dump on the concept of competitive sports. Not even necessarily the Cubs exclusively (obviously the bullpen is putrid and should have Hoyer looking for a job) but every night I turn on a game and sooner or later some dickhead who either throws 100 with no location is walking 10 guys home or throws 79 and gets nuked by all 9 hitters is coming out of the bullpen to completely destroy what had been a fantastic game. Idk what can be done, or if my perception is skewed by following the worst pitching staff in baseball currently, but MLB needs to find a way to end the reliance on relief pitchers and keep starters healthy and throwing 7-8 innings, because its just a garbage product. Jacob Webb and co. are in the major leagues and people talk about expansion of the league. What a joke.

Agreed. Have to give credit to the run producing machine in MIL. It’s crazy how they put runs up. +170 DIFF is insane. But…….the amount of RISP LOB for us is an issue. Especially in late innings. After we went up 3-1 there were still men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. A base hit would have scored them thus making it 4 to tie and 5 to win for Brewsters. Odds are tremendously higher for that to happen rather than 2 to tie 3 to win. The race for 4th spot will be cool. Phil’s are hot right now but I think we’ll get a winning streak put together in next 3 weeks. Maybe starting some relievers? Letting starters finish? I’d like to see more stats on that. But I long for the days of 32 complete games in a season like Fergie threw. 🤪 but they are long gone never to be again.

Besides the bullpen blowups.  Shaw is the dumbest mother horsefeathers who ever played for the Cubs.  I hope his ass is gone in the offseason.

Who could have ever foreseen him having issues with judgement?

Difficult to get a handle on likelihoods with a team that has to be utterly demoralized after what just happened.  I'll go with 5-11.  Am I shooting that from my ass?  Yes.

No lead is gonna feel safe the rest of the year.  Hell Webb by himself has lost 3 games that we had the lead with 2 outs.  You almost have to be trying to do that!!!  Had an 0-2 count on Yelich - who is nowhere near the hitter he was 6-7 year ago -  with 2 out and nobody on and still lost.  That's gut wrenching but if they had somebody better they'd try him.  How did they all get so bad all together at the same time.

Blame Jed for dumpster diving if you like, but it's worked for us before and it works for the Brewers and other teams.  The guys we have need to figure it out because we can't count on any white knight charging in to save our bullpen.

Its says a lot about the professionalism and character of the position players that they continue to play their absolute guts out making fantastic plays despite knowing it will inevitably be erased by a reliever who doesn’t belong in affiliated, let alone major league, baseball.

Yeah, I just watched that Webb / Chourio AB again (because I'm stupid and masochistic).  The pitch Webb grooved to him.....wow.  That's not even batting practice.  It's your Dad tossing pitches to you in the home run derby.

Webb was saying he's sick of letting the team down.  I appreciate the honesty but I don't see how a guy who throws that pitch (it's not the first time let's face it) can remain in the majors.  But he's who we have in the bullpen. Actually was one of our better BP arms.

I mean, they got walked off by Seattle and then put up 19 runs the next day. They lost the rubber game to the Reds last Sunday and then put up 17 on the Brewers the next day.

I just don't think baseball is as run driven as you're making it out to be. And nothing has really fundamentally changed from their playoff position from 24 hours ago to now. The bullpen is an atrocity but it's been an atrocity all year. We aren't missing some shut down guys from earlier this year. The rotation is pretty objectively as good as its been all year, or better. Bad pitchers are giving up very costly runs at very bad times. The offense is comfortably the best in baseball the last two weeks, the last month, the second half, the entire year.

If something has fundamentally changed in the last however many games, besides just vibes, we should talk about that and if it's fixable. But, to me, it's an elite offense with a terrible pitching staff, the same thing it's been all year. Which is an 81-65 team (7th best in baseball), with a +130 RD (3rd best in baseball).

That interview was really upsetting to read. How a guy like him can have the gall to list the hitters under his list of “areas that need to be better”, is baffling. Like dude, you are a major component of the worst pitching staff in baseball by a dramatic margin, own that and either don’t say anything or admit that the pitching alone is a catastrophic failure by every metric and is letting down the position players. That was gross.

Can you link to the interview? And how is it Jacob Webb's fault that there are other pitchers on the team much worse than he is?

Oh man, I don't want to argue but how has it not fundamentally changed when we lost a full game in the WC standings?  I do appreciate the positives though, don't get me wrong.

I only saw the clip of him saying his location is bad and he's sick of letting the team down.  I didn't see all the rest of it.
