Personally, I like Happ better than Seiya, but I agree I want them to keep Seiya.  He should help the team more than Happ in the next few seasons.

That said, I would be surprised, if they offer him a 4yr/$92M.  I agree that is probably a fair contract, but I think it'll be more like 3yr/$60M.  Not sure if Seiya takes it, though sounded like he wanted to stay.

I like them both.   It would be nice to have Happ finish most of the rest of his career here, at least until he starts to really decline and we'd have to move on.  Not sure the Cubs are willing to pay for that though.

They could bring back one of Happ/Seiya and we'd be fine.  We really don't have many other good options in the OF for OD 2027 besides Shaw.  Ramirez could probably hold his own, but I'd wager they'd want one of Shaw/Ramirez on the bench to backup INF.

They could also swing a trade.

They're certainly still a contender for a wild card spot.   But if they want to rely on something other than getting very lucky then they need a good SP if they want to go far in the playoffs.

I think they need 1 of Boyd/Shota/Cabrera to shine from now to the deadline to show they can have another playoff quality SP besides Brown in order it to be worth giving up good prospects for a another good quality SP.

If the trade deadline were today I think Jed would still grab us a SP but more in the Sonny Gray tier at best.

I'm hopeful for Cabrera next season with the whole winter to improve but not confident if he can turn the corner this year, but it's possible.  Also praying Boyd is effective and healthy

I'm optimistic for Shota, he pitches well when he can locate the splitter.

I would rather they pay more and come away with a guy they can have for several years after this one. Someone like Detmers or Soriano. However, Gray, as a rental, would be fine if he comes cheap enough.

Like you said, besides the one starter via trade they will still need another pitcher or two in the rotation to step up. Then they have a chance.

Brown, the guy they get in a trade, and one or more of Cabrera, Boyd, Imanaga, or even Steele or Wiggins for the playoff rotation.

Yeah a controllable SP would be great.  And they probably need it for next year too with Boyd/ Imanaga being FA, along with Taillon and Rea.

Moreno doesn't want to trade Detmers or Soriano. Best guy you're gonna get with any control is probably Joe Ryan. Unless Posey wants to trade Webb

So the Angels are definitely not a lock to act rationally (dumbest team in the league now that the Rockies have entered the 21st century?), but I think there's a healthy amount of that simply being a thing any team would say simply as a negotiation tactic.

Give them something MLB ready as a headliner and I assume they'd make a deal.

I'd be with you but Moreno has a history of this kind of horsefeathers. I believe him

Joe Ryan only has one year after this one. If they go with a controlled pitcher I hope it is for more than just the ‘27 season. I think I would rather get the rental over a guy with just the ‘27 season of control.

this is probably gonna get rained out as well

I live outside of Philly and our forecast up through here and NYC is bleak all week with the exception of Wednesday. That’s most likely why the doubleheader is scheduled for then. All week looks rough

I’m really bad figuring out fair trades. In this one I guess it depends on what each team thinks of the guys they are getting back. Both Early and Ruran would be guys. Is and the future. But not sure the Cubs value them that high. Duran has been dropping the last 2 years and Early hasn’t been great either. But, who knows🤷

That is nuts. Even a team clearly making the playoffs doesn’t give that away. Cubs are in a bad spot when it comes to TDL deals. While they are contending for a a lot in the playoffs, they aren’t a sure thing. So they can’t go get that missing piece, like the ‘16 team did with Chapman. Prices are going to be high. Not really sure how aggressive the FO will be.

I don't think they'll be as aggressive as what people think they should be. They're not in the top 4 of the NL (Brewers, Braves, Phillies, and Dodgers are above them). You add that with the future CBA/lockout situations, and the asking price/demand for pitchers, I don't see Jed willing to be aggressive to pull any trigger on a Alcantara, Gray, Ryan type pitcher.

I do think, however, he will find a way to go one step below them and get potentially a Michael Wacha/Walker Buehler type pitchers  (not saying it will be them), but it'll be something to solidify the "we won 85-88 games, and we potentially made the playoffs"

I’ll never get over him holding onto Ohtani during the trade deadline in his walk year multiple games out of a playoff seed. He even doubled down by trading for Giollito.
