What would you want from Boston in return? Their pitching staff has come together under Breslow. Their hitting, not so much.

Feels like this is an off-season discussion.

It's not if the Cubs don't start playing better.

It should have happened last off-season when his trade value was sky high.  He still has decent trade value, but it will probably decrease because he is labeled a utility player.  The Cubs should have traded players like Wicks and Alcantara while they still had some trade value.

For all we know, they never had any value.

I just don't see the rush to trade Shaw when the Cubs need all the help they can get offensively. I do recognize the Cubs do need help, equally, at pitching. Get Shaw back, put Bregman on the DL and see where the Cubs are at by the end of June/early July. Get Bregman season turn around and go from there with Shaw. I just don't think trading Shaw right now, makes any sense.

Replacing Bregman with Shaw and putting Bregman on the IL makes absolutely no sense. If the Cubs can get a quality starting pitcher for Shaw they should do it immediately.

I think they should trade from their minor league prospects.  This team isn't good enough to weaken its MLB roster to improve somewhere else.  They'll also reload on some prospects if Happ/Seiya walk, or the team sells off at deadline.

Plus they'll likely have openings to fill in the OF next year.

There is no possibility of salvaging this season boss, by early July we will be realistically eliminated from WC3.

According to Baseball Trade Values, Shaw alone had the same value as TOR names like Gore or Ryan.

The good news about something like this is you can justify doing it regardless of what the standings look like.  It's purely about finding the proper exchange of value.

That said I would generally lean toward getting someone a little more established, something more akin to the Edward Cabrera deal.  But the specifics matter a lot, and Boston's got a lot of pitching so it's not a matchup I'd dismiss out of hand.

The team probably needs two SPs and two OFs this winter.  You can probably count on Shaw for one of those SP spots, especially if we have a Conforto type on the bench to compliment him.  So if you trade Shaw for pitching it should be for a guy who is a no doubter for a SP slot.  Not a young guy competing to be in the mix, someone whose name you write into the rotation in pen.
