I'd love the Cubs to get someone good, but the names the Cubs can probably get now are the names that Jon Morosi mentioned: Bailey Ober.

And the best thing I can say about Bailey Ober and his 88mph fastball is that I guess he has no torn meniscuses right now.

It's almost assuredly a "wait until teams actually want to sell" situation for a bit.

Regardless of how bad they are right now, I don’t see a way the Mets dump now. Too much money invested. He isn’t going anywhere. And if the Mets are within 5 or 6 games of the WC at the TDL, I doubt they deal him.

@Rcal10@Jason Ross I agree that it won't happen now, but come July that's a very intriguing name IMO.  Controllable thru next season and he gets paid less AAV than Boyd.  Pretty much a cost controlled Boyd replacement for next season too.

I think it is a players option for next year. So I would guess he would elect to be a FA if he pitches well.

Good catch on the player option, didn't realize that.

Tyler Ferguson is a likely candidate to join the Iowa mix this week.  6-4  95+ 5 pitch mix with minor league option remaining.

What’s the word on Wiggins and Wicks? Cabrera is also an injury risk so it’s great that they’ve knocked off these wins before they start treading water with the injuries.

I’d rather have Brown in the rotation if he’s only pitching every 3-4 days when Thielbar returns with Assad eating innings in blowouts.

Wicks has been bad this year when he's been healthy. Wiggins hasn't pitched in a month in a game. Neither are options nor will be for a bit.

Right. Do we know when Wiggins will be at least?

No. With all Cubs MiLB injuries, expect the team to be less than forthcoming. As with Conrad, and others, expect them to just be randomly added to an ACL roster one day, or pop back up in pictures. Before then, the Cubs won't really be very open.

From a fan perspective, it'd be cool to know more, but the Cubs don't really gain a lot by being super open with MiLB injury timelines.

Yeah I don’t think there’s anyone available now that can also slot into a playoff top 3. But we probably need someone(s) to soak up some innings here. Wins trump everything else, but this particular winning streak has put some pretty unsustainable strain on the bullpen. Day off Monday, but then it’s straight into Braves/white Sox/brewers for 9 in a row.

It’s probably wrong, but the CBS app has brown starting tomorrow and then Taillon Sunday on three days rest, so clearly they have no idea what’s going on. We could use a blowout or two here.

Go get a bad pitcher now, then go get a good pitcher in July.

I agree with you. Get someone now. But, for me, it isn’t so much that they have to get someone now because of their current situation, it is more so because if someone else goes down they are really screwed. I mean, whoever they get now to eat innings probably won’t be any better than Assad. So he isn’t exactly taking stress off the pen. If/when Theilbar and maybe Harvey come back the pen will be fine. But can we count on health of Tailon, Imanaga and Cabrera to the ASB? I would say no. They re-signed Velesquez. He might be the bad arm they bring in.

As for July, even if Imanaga, Steele, Cabrera and Boyd are all healthy (which would be a miracle), I still hope they add someone in that level. Even if it means, at that time, going to a 6 man rotation with Tailon also in the rotation, that is fine. Maybe it will keep all starters healthy and limit some innings.

I wouldn't hate the idea of a bad pitcher. I think with Cabrera, Rea, Shota, Assad, Brown, Taillon that they probably are fine in the interim in terms of "guys who you could start" as long as you're confident Thielbar and Harvey are very close to returning to fill out the BP. But someone like the aforementioned Bailey Ober should be effectively free and if you wanted to add him, as another length option in the bullpen, I'm cool with that, too. With the way the rotation has gone, it's probably safe to assume one with catch ebola, another will be in a freak freight train accident and a third will vanish off the face of the Earth right now and having an extra human who you could coax through 4 innings wouldn't be the worst thing.

Yeah Thielbar and the improbable reemergence of Harvey might help you avoid the concept of having to go with Ryan Rolison and Tyler Thornton in the 10th inning on back to back nights (not trying to get into some under the hood conversation here, just saying that was very, very much not the plan), but they aren't going to give you more than 4 innings a week.

With the day off Monday, you maybe want to consider calling up a starter for this weekend, ideally as soon as tomorrow. That lets the remaining starters stay on normal rest (or more), and keeps Assad and Brown in their current roles which have become pretty crucial. There wouldn't be a need for another starter after that until next Saturday, which gives you through the off day Monday to figure out if you want to go get someone or move Brown or Assad into that spot.

I'd still much rather roll with Brown/Wicks/Assad than anyone you could reasonably get externally.

Like go get another veteran body to stash at Iowa sure, but the young(ish) guys are:

A) Probably better straight up

B) Provide long term value by showing if they can stick (even if the answe is no)

C) Are easy to move out of the way once reinforcements arrive

I get this. But the problem is rolling with Brown or Assad weakens an already weakened pen. This is good if/when Theilbar or Harvey comes back. Or maybe it is fine with Roberts brought up. As for Wicks, I have been a fan of his for a while now. But he just isn’t getting it done in Iowa. I have lost confidence in him. He would have been a great solution if he was pitching well.
