Definitely. Got work him bigtime at catcher this winter

He's not going to get starts next year over Amaya and Kelly no matter how much he improves in the offseason. I just don't think you become a good catcher in an offseason he's probably already older than you'd like to develop into a MLB caliber one. The Cubs value how a catcher handles the staff too much (see letting Contreras walk as evidence). Mo is a DH.

Because he can’t catch and our DH is a better hitter.

I dont care if he can't catch. You dont send that bat back down to AAA in favor of a Reese McGuire.

But that’s not the decision because you need a backup catcher regardless. He comes up to be a…platoon DH? pinch hitter? and we’re essentially punting on the chances of him ever being a serviceable major league catcher. A 135 wRC DH only guy is marginally value in like, a lesser version of Seiya Suzuki way. A 135 wRC bat who can also play a mediocre catcher is one of the most valuable players in the league.

It’s a horrible game.  We are getting destroyed.  Let’s see what happens after an off day that we obviously really needed.

We're getting ahead of ourselves here, but maybe the Cubs look to trade Kelly.  Having two very good hitching catchers is a luxury that few, if any, teams have and maybe the Cubs can capitalize on Kelly's outstanding season and team friendly contract to fill another hole.

Guess Civale should have started.

Wonder if there is a game 4 do the Cubs consider Civali?

I wouldn't be opposed to that on the face of it, but Amaya cannot stay healthy and then you risk having Ballesteros and McGuire (or trading for another middling veteran catcher) as your catching tandem

I do think Ballesteros will be overrated a bit by Cubs fans this winter. He's certainly been impressive but both Caisse and Shaw were clearly better than him in AAA this year for example

I'll take Ballesteros' bat over Caissie if you asked me to pick right now. Caissie has too much swing and miss in his swing.

Yeah, he's been really bad. Have to wonder if he rushed back from injury and his mechanics are off some. He was really good in Washigon and hurt by a bad defense! And the stuff is there. I don't know.

I barely have anything optimistic to say today and ya'll know how rare that is.

It's game 1, though. And it doesn't matter if you lose by 1 or 50, it only counts once.

You’re absolutely correct, but I think the poor decision making and lack of acquiring any talent at the deadline has made people irrationally upset at this loss.

true, but the Cubs, more than anything, need quality starting pitching

Horton, Steele, Boyd, Imanaga, Taillon, With Rea/Assad/Brown/Soroka/trades. It's already a good staff headed into next year.

No. Shota, Taillon, and Boyd and if not Boyd then Rea.

It sure about that. If Civali goes 5 shut out innings today and his stuff rates out good, why not start him. I believe one of the more stat savvy posters pointed out Civali’s underlying numbers were really good and what he was doing wasn’t smoke and mirrors, like Flexen.
