7/31 - Cubs Trade Deadline Rumors & Discussion

It's deadline day! Post rumors and rumor discussion here, we'll have separate threads for any additional Cubs trades that are announced.

I’m betting Jed lands one of Cabrera, Alcantara, Ryan, or Gore today plus Willi Castro. If that happens, then I’d say this deadline is a success. 
 

Id take a massive trade with Minnesota that lands us Ryan, Castro, and Jax lol

I am going to toss out a hunch name. Drew Rasmussen. He has one more year of control after this one. Rays usually dump these sort of guys!at this time. The Cubs and Rays have gotten together before so they know each others organization. Just feels like a move that Jed would/could make.

My guess is the Cubs will spend most of the day trying to get a controlled SP. There are obvious ones like Ryan, Gore and Cabrera, and likely a few we have no idea are available. My hope is they can get one, but I also know that's a pretty tall task. 

As the day goes, they might have to pivot. As much as I'd love to bully a team off of their controlled SP, for all of the reasons I wasn't worried Jed would pay two-top-100 types for Suarez, I am equally confident that Hoyer won't do that. He will value these pitchers in a specific way and if they never come down to his level, then they'll remain in their current colors. At that point, I think the Cubs end up with Shane Bieber. The Cubs always get connected with him and with how both teams get together on trades, I think they'll be a team who will hold onto Bieber late into the day.

He's not really a fit for us innings wise. Rays have him on an innings limit after his 3rd elbow surgery and have pitched him 5, 4, 2, 2, and 3 innings his last 5 starts. I believe they have him on a hard 150 innings cap, so not a guy we could count on for 9-10 traditional more starts along with playoff work.

Ryan>>>Gore>>Cabrera>>>>>>Bieber  for me.   

Now if Jed shocks the world and lands Skenes or something,  I'm not going to complain.

Just waking up to the Suarez news. Sucks, I’m a little disappointed, though there are still bats that can help us. Like I’ve said, not our biggest hole to fill but I do think we need another bat for certain situations and the cost didn’t seem as high as I expected based on what reports were suggesting. 

not the end of the world though, excited to see how the day plays out.

Really curious what the plan is bat-wise if they don't end up with Castro.  Suarez really took up all the oxygen in the room on the non pitching rumor front.

Ok, didn’t know that. Rasmussen is a bad idea then. I think Jason summaried the day pretty well. I would just add a 3rd option if they can’t get a controlled starter and Bieber is too pricey. The rental. And if those I would be ok with Kelly, Morton and Gallen, in that order. 
I also wouldn’t mind Iglesias if he is cheap.
