You must really be happy that we have Corey at a quarter of the price then, huh?

Corey doesn't steal a bunch of homers a year, though. Maybe if he half the heart of a Torii Hunter, he would have some homers in his glove instead of in the stands.

The wall in Minnesota isn't as high as the one in Wrigley.... he would only steal homers on the road.

Those are just weak excuses. Corey needs to start stepping up in the stealing of home runs department. He has only grabbed one so far this year and that was a month or so ago.

Um, I hope you're being sarcastic. People on here know I'm not a fan of Patterson, but I don't expect him to be able to jump and rob homers that are headed for the center field basket. Have you ever seen anyone else do that? Why do you expect it from Corey?

My sarcasm detector is shot right now as I feel like hell and have been napping off and on all day.

Ok, good. I'm like "burnt is more intelligent than that!"

Per the Tribune:

"The fans at Wrigley Field have cut Patterson little slack, unlike most young players coming up with the Cubs.

The harsh reception is likely to make Patterson consider leaving the organization when he becomes a free agent after the 2007 season, unless things change drastically in the next two years.

"One thing, he'll probably get really thick skin at the end of his career here," Baker said. "

Corey ain't no Tori Hunter, fellas.

Hunter 269/343/495, 19 steals

I don't have the heart to look up what Patterson's stats are.

I think its time for a change of scenery deal for Corey. Maybe Hoops or one of our knowledgeable folks could ID a few players in similar contractual situations that could also use a change. This could be the best thing for all parties.

Things just don't look like they are going to change.

Austin Kearns?

Has anyone NOT given up on this guy yet? He's playing like KGonz. He has a huge hole in his bat, and has a horrible eye.

Boras isn't getting a lot of money from anyone, and the Cubs aren't getting much for him either.

Keep him, trade him, whatever. But don't bat him leadoff. He's a #8 hitter at best now.

I haven't. And I know quite a few others who haven't.

It's frustrating to watch him struggle so much lately, but I haven't given up on him yet. He's shown in the past that he's a major league hitter; he can do it again. Whether he WILL remains to be seen.

I can't imagine Patterson doing that much worse. I think his value is at an all-time low, and if we are going to trade him, now is not the time.

I still haven't given up hope, btw, I'll have no problem if the Cubs stick with him. Moving him out of the #1 hole is a must though.

Corey is like a bad stock. An Enron or Worldcom caliber bad stock. Eventually you just have to cut your losses and move on. Otherwise you're just flushing money (and at bats) down the toilet.

If we're talking about value, I don't think a 15 for 45 "hot streak" would raise his value any between now and July 31st. I don't think his OBP skyrocketing towards the .305 range is going to cause the phones to ring off the hook. Organizations have enough statistical evidence to show that Corey is poor hitter, and a good 2-3 weeks is not going to change that.

At the very least he should be benched. There should be absolutely no debate about that.

Cpatt is having one of the worst seasons for a Cubs regular (and by regular I mean a guy who lays every day - not Tom Goodwin or Jose Macias) in the last 25 years. The man has a 275 OBP and 80-plus Ks as oppossed to just a dozedn or so walks.

Please, CPatt supporters, pleaserealize that he either stinks or is desperately in need of a change in scenery.

Either way I don't want him on the team anymomre.

Please Mr. Baker, start JH Jr. in CF today and lead him off - I am attending the game w/ my fam and would like to enjoy it.

Maybe that's his problem - he's all tuckered out.

Move Walker to leadoff Move Barret or Hollandsworth/Dubois behind Aramis. Let Corey find his stroke. Not that difficult.

Corey is my CF until the end of NEXT year. Despite what some have said he has shown plenty over the last couple of years to suggest there is still reason to have some hope. Dump him now are there will be serious regrets (My opinion). He going through probably his worst streach now which will end.

I have given up on seeing his potential realized in a Cubs uniform but, find myself rooting for him evey time he gets up to bat.I want for him so bad to drive in a run or take a walk just break out of his slump.Yesterday when they showed him in the dugout after the game was over I couldn't help but feel sorry for him because you know he is trying and he wants so bad to do good. He's a good kid and early in the season I was all for getting rid of him but now wanting him to break out and succeed. And now with seeing what I have just written I'm really confused ???

With the ASB approaching what Corey needs is to get away from baseball for a few days. The Cubs should find a way to place him on the DL for about a week.

Right now his problems are as much mental as they are physical.

I really feel bad for him.

Right now, he is really painfull to watch. However, I'm not ready to dump him. Maybe it's me but, he seems to be pressing out there. Maybe from watching Lee be so locked in has made him think "Hey, I can do that too" which is making him overswing. Or maybe I'm grasping at straws.

I think he is really pressing, wanting to break out and not hear the boo birds.I think he should start swinging at pitches he normally wouldn't and lay off pitches he normally would swing at again, grasping at straws.

At this point, I wouldn't have a problem with him standing at the plate with his bat on his shoulder, just watching pitches. Pitchers know Corey so well at this point, they rarely need to throw him a strike to strike him out. Hernandez went upstairs on him over and over, and Corey fell for it every time.

Well, I have. Despite flashes here and there, he's never ever shown that he has the plate discipline or hand eye coordination necessary to get the bat on the ball consistently. He will always be a huge K guy. And the only way to get around it is to hit a ton of home runs, and draw walks. He'll never be able to do either. He's had more than ample number of big league AB's to show whether he can live up to his talent. His career is looking like it's becoming like Jose Hernandez's. And he's killing us with is 0-4 3K's at the leadoff spot while Lee continues to be on fire.

Why is anyone still a fan of Corey Patterson? He's 25, and at some point you've got to stop talking about potential and his '5 tools' and ask yourself if he's actually producing anything. At all. As someone else pointed out, Corey is hitting .236 and does not walk. He's totally lost. He's had five years of major league experience, and if he was going to show meaningful improvement, it would have been before now. If he were someone like Nomar or Bobby Abreu, someone with a track record of producing at a high level, then maybe there'd be cause for this extreme brand of optimism that surrounds even the most average of Cub prospects, but all we've got to look back on is a whole lot of mediocrity broken up by that 82 game stretch in 2003.

Has anyone noticed that the only year that Corey has been anywhere near useful was the first half of 2003? His 2001 season was horrible, 2002 was only slightly better, 2004 was fairly dismal and in 2005, he's clearly been a serious liability. Heck, his 2003 wasn't really that amazing, and he's clearly regressed(and badly) the two seasons after that.

He's been with the Cubs for ~5 years at the major league level, and he just hasn't panned out. It's time to admit that. Given what a poor baseball player Corey Patterson is, I'm constantly amazed at the level of support I find on this board for him.

Honestly, I don't care what's done with him. Designate him for assignment and let someone else deal with him. We might as well do this now, as he doesn't have any trade value, and he probably never will. Barring a holy revelation from on high, I believe that Corey will be a .250 hitter, high K, low BB journeyman OF his whole career, and I'm pretty sure we don't really want to pin our hopes on him. So what if he's cheap? If all we wanted was poor production at inexpensive levels, we could have just signed Macias as our full-time 3B. Sometimes, if you want production, you have to pay for it. I'd rather pay, I dunno, Mark Kotsay $6.5 million and make it to the playoffs then pay Corey $2.8 million and sit out October, solely to have the pleasure of being frugal.

If the Cubs can't move him, they need to change his role on the team. I personally, would---until further notice---take Corey out of the starting lineup, and make Hairston the FULL-TIME starter. I would then make Corey the 4th OF/defensive replacement, until he can show he should be trusted to start again. He is a LIABILITY out there. He hasn't EARN the right to continue to work through his slump, which is now going on 5 yrs.

When Matt Clement struggled last yr, Baker had NO problem from pulling him from the rotation, and inserting Glendon Rusch. So why is he hestitating pulling CPatt for Hairston?

Maybe because Clement's neck and other injuries made it easier to do so?
