I think the only problem with the Dominican team will be their pitching staff. They only have Pedro and Colon who are real aces. The United States has incredible pitching out the wazoo. I think second to the US in pitching is Venezuela.

The Dominican might have the best batting order though.

I found this funny. From Rotoworld:

Alex Rodriguez - 3B - Yankees

Alex Rodriguez told The New York Post yesterday he has decided not to participate in the WBC because he didn't want to dishonor his native America or the Dominican Republic.

And that pretty much sums up Alex Rodriguez. He works so hard at giving people no reason to dislike him that there's just not much there to like about him. Maybe he'll end up changing his mind about this if MLB picks his team for him. That way, he can get away without alienating anyone. Dec. 16 - 3:37 am et

Daily News"]Puerto Rican officials, upset with Cuba's exclusion from the World Baseball Classic, have asked out of serving as a host for the March tournament.

..............

Within hours of MLB reapplying for the new permit, the Cuban government said in Havana that it would donate any money received at the tournament to U.S. hurricane victims.

"Although we have never competed for money, in order to offer options the Cuban Baseball Federation would be willing for the money associated with participation in the classic to go to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans," a statement read on Cuban government television said.

..............

Organizers are prepared to substitute another country, likely Colombia or Nicaragua, if the Cuba ban stands. Assembling a team of Cuban defectors, which might include former Yankees Jose Contreras and Orlando Hernandez, isn't acceptable because the World Baseball Classic is sanctioned by baseball's international governing body, so teams need to be sponsored by governments and can't be formed by MLB, according to a source familiar with the event's organization.

Associated Press"]CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela offered to host part of next year's World Baseball Classic in place of Puerto Rico and suggested moving the final to Canada, proposals aimed at keeping Cuba in the 16-team tournament.

Such an arrangement would open the way for communist-led Cuba to participate in the first World Cup-style baseball tournament. Cuba is banned from playing on U.S. soil, and Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth.

"We hope that the United States government changes its position," Edwin Zerpa, president of the government-run Venezuelan Baseball Federation, said Wednesday. "But, if not, we propose that Group C play in Caracas. We don't approve of Cuba's exclusion."

Only teams in Group C -- Olympic champion Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Panama -- would be invited to play in Venezuela, with the final in Canada, Zerpa told The Associated Press by telephone.

Putting the semifinals and finals in the Skydome would be less than ideal, but better that than no Cuba in the tournament.

IABF says, "No Cuba, no Classic.

Baseball's world governing body has threatened to withdraw its sanctioning of the World Baseball Classic unless the Bush administration allows Cuba to compete.

Rich Levin, a spokesman for the commissioner's office, said Friday that a letter was faxed from International Baseball Federation president Aldo Notari, informing Major League Baseball of the IBAF's decision.

It is unclear whether the 16-team tournament, scheduled for March 3-20, would go forward without the IBAF's sanction. The tournament is being jointly administered by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Way to grab Bush by the short ones. Now we see which is greater, his love of baseball or his BS political games.

And, in an unrelated note, A-Rod has said he'd play for the US.

Good, I hope they pull the sanction and the WBC gets canned.

Our concerns were centered on making sure that no money was going to the Castro regime and that the World Baseball Classic would not be misused by the regime for spying.

That would be terrible. God help us all if Castro learns the secret recipe for the garlic fries in Pac Bell.

Still, good to hear the tourney's on and Cuba will participate.

remember when chappelle's show was getting ready to come back for season two, and there were commercials where dave read viewer mail? and one of the letters asked why the show wasn't cancelled? i want to send the world baseball classic a letter like that.

Dear World Baseball Classic,

Why aren't you cancelled?

Love,

Good to hear the Cubans are in. No way they'll win this, but their participation shows sportsmanship IMHO.

The eligibility issue is getting a bit comical. When reading up on who's likely to play for the Netherlands, some weird names came up.

Mark Mulder? What's his connection to that country? Unless someone at MLB simply happened to notice he was born in South Holland, but forgot the (IL) bit.

The same connection Mike Piazza has to Italy and Nomar has to Mexico. I believe his grandparents were born in the Netherlands.

Nice with the South Holland bit, though.

I'm gonna have to say that I'm not too excited about the WBC either. I have a problem with it taking place prior to the season when guys are supposed to be preparing for the MLB season. You're going to have injuries, and guys that are going to wear down later in the year. Like Goony has said, I don't see any good coming from this.

Barry Bonds is now out of the WBC.

When my name was first announced for the WBC, my gut reaction was that I wanted to play. After much thought and discussion with my family I have decided to remove myself from the upcoming World Baseball Classic roster. After the announcement I received a lot of criticism as well as concern from fans and my family and friends. The obvious objections were about my health and whether or not I would beready to play. In the end, I decided that I can't take any chances that might jeopardize my season. I don't want to give the impression that the WBC is not important. I know this means a lot to showcasing our sport worldwide, and the patriotism of playing for Team USA would have been a great honor. I feel what is best for me, my family, the Giants, and our fans is that I sit the WBC out.

People who don't like this tournament sure pay a lot of attention to it.

With both Cuba and Japan on board, I'm really looking forward to it.
