Speaking of discourse I'm tired of hearing...

Can we stop with the "well Tom Brady never got blown out in a Super Bowl" stuff and a reason why Mahomes will never be the GOAT. Sure, it's true that Brady's SB losses were all close. You know what's also true? Tom Brady lost by 19 to Joe Flacco in a game where Brady threw two picks and fumbled in the first quarter and the Pats trailed 24-0 after the first quarter. Tom Brady also lost to Joe Flacco twice, Jake Plummer, Mark Sanchez, Nick Foles and Ryan Tannehill in the playoffs.

Brady is still the GOAT and Mahomes isn't anywhere close to it yet despite being on a trajectory to get there (and there's a decent chance he never gets there). But people act like Brady never laid an egg in a playoff game which is just wrong.

Any and all talk of the GOAT in any sport is discourse I’m tired of hearing. What is the sports world’s obsession with crowning a GOAT in every sport?

Totally fair while the players are still playing, especially since it seems to happen on a week to week basis in the playoffs.

When Mahomes is 38 or whatever and nearing the end? Sure.

That’s what those discussions used to be. Now it’s debated ad nauseam. Mahomes, Djokovic, Biles, Lebron…

Brady is not the GOAT, neither is Mahomes.

These guys play where defenses are neutered

In the case of Simone Biles - it's pretty clear that her accomplishments surpass other gymnasts. And that's where I'm ok with the idea of making that call. She's proven it and accomplished more than anyone else, doing more difficult things than any of them.

LeBron has a statistical case as the GOAT of basketball - and it's insane that he's continued playing at such a high level for so long - but it's hard to compare statistics and accomplishments across eras (which is also true for baseball, hockey, and football). On one hand, the game favors offense as much as ever, but it's also clear that level of athlete and the general skill level worldwide is better now than ever before.

I want all 17 game season records to be isolated into their own strata

The 16 game season records cannot be broken by a 17 game season. "But he only played in 16 games!" horsefeathers that

Who was the single season rushing leader when the season was 14 games? 12 games? Those guys are still the record holder in my eyes

This also does a little work on the "era" front

I think it's universally accepted that Jim Brown was the greatest RB of all-time. As much as I/we/Bears fans always want to push Payton, Brown is always at the top of the list. The man would have had 2 2K seasons in 16-game formats.

We need to use yards per game more. OJ in 1973 averaged 143 yards per game, which is 10 more than anyone else has done. Walter Payton also missed out on a 2K season due to only playing 14 games.

I would never debate the merits of either of them. It just becomes difficult to live in the present and enjoy their careers when we are constantly bombarded with debates over their place in history. Nothing can happen organically anymore. If the HR race of ‘98 happened today we would be constantly listening to debates about whether McGwire and Sosa are the greatest HR hitters in history rather than just enjoying the race for what it was.

One also has to look at how much better they were than their peers. I posted it in the Gretzky thread. Jim Brown was so much better than anyone who played contemporary to him that he cannot be touched. Same with Jordan, Gretzky, and Ruth.

I don't know about QBs, Marino was great but he played in an era of great QBs. I don't think Brady or Mahomes are special from the standpoint of the position, but they won a lot of big games. When I think of a QB, I think big arm and an accurate passer- Like Jim Kelly or Elway. Peyton Manning was probably the smartest QB, Montana the best under pressure. But the best all time, I don't think there is one single QB that would fit that category.

One thing to consider with respect to these discussions of eras are the advancements in equipment and medicine. Specific to football, pads are smaller now and allow for greater flexibility than even just 20 years ago. Likewise, a player can return from an ACL tear to his previous form where in previous eras it was potentially career ending.

You also have to take into account the natural evolution of the game. Nobody in the 70s was considering that we'd have mobile QBs like Mahomes, Allen, or Jackson one day. Wait another couple of decades and we will be watching something that right now we can't imagine seeing, but it will be considered the standard of the game in the future.

It's a dam shame the Bears, being in Chicago, as compared to the rest of the North, got such a terrible food grade.  None of Detroit, Minneapolis or Green Bay, when comes to food, could hold a candle to Chicago.

The food that makes Chicago a tremendous food city is not the food you’d feed professional athletes

That's true, maybe, on their "cheat" days.

Geno Smith to raiders is interesting

seattle realizing a nice story doesn’t really mean much when it comes to title hopes.

Oakland being Oakland

I don't really understand the trade. Is Vegas really going to compete in that division? I mean, I guess you have to do something when you hire Pete Carroll but Geno doesn't really move the needle much. As for Seattle, why not go for it more in what appears to be a winnable division? Are they going to blow it up now? Why would Macdonald have gone there just to have them blow it up a year later.

It's a pretty shoddy QB class. Either the Raiders are using the 6th overall to pick a QB or they're buying a little time until next year's draft. Either way, Geno is someone Carroll has a rapport with. Makes total sense for the Raiders. Not so much for Seattle.

It’s kind of exactly like the Carroll hire was for them, the road to respectability rather than a run at contending.

for Seattle they are moving an older guy in the last year of his contract they probably didn’t want to extend on his terms. And are expected to try and get Darnold who is a different younger version of the pumpkin that is Geno Smith.

Seattle gets Darnold 3/110
