I can't believe Dubois was pinch hit for with a guy who had fewer hits all season than Dubois had today.

That's only unbelievable if you assume we have a competent manager...

It's called playing the percentages.

Best. Sig. Ever.

seconded. I hate Macias, in fact I think his only role on this team should be pulling all the real players cars up to the exit after the game as well as calling cabs. Another thing that I found hilarious is when Ben Grieve walked out of the stadium to leave he was carying one bag with a pirates logo on it and another with a brewers logo. Can't the Cubs afford a new bag for him?

Hahaha, that sig is excellent Jon.

(even though it was my idea)

But I did reference the episode.

Making the picture was a good idea, though. Thanks.

Putting Hendry as Smithers though is brilliant, so you've gone beyond my idea of "you should replace Strawberry and Homer with Dubois and Macias and photoshop them in that Simpsons scene".

I'm upset Dusty pinch hit for Dubois after the game Dubois was having. He pinch hit with Macias because a righty was pitching. And then, promptly, a lefty was brought in and Macias grounded our weakly. The Cubs could have used that insurance run.

Also, that hit-and-run with Lee was idiotic.

I think this is compounded by the fact that Macias has one hit against righties this year and none against lefties. Dubois, may not be his best against a righty, but he had 2 hits on the afternoon which is two more than the POS Macias. I'm seriously thinking about kicking Dusty in the nuts if I see him.

That picture was great. I was actually reminded of this scenario while watching the game, unfortunately it didn't turn out the same way. I was hoping Macias would get drilled in the melon as well, but he didn't. Anyway...is there a larger version of that picture, I set it up as my wallpaper but it's a little stretched.

I don't know if I'm ready to give up on this season, but Dusty no longer fits this team. Using Macias for Dubois and Remmy for Wuertz this week is proof enough for me.
I'm not willing to give up on this season. After nearly a century without a title the Cubs finally appeared to be on the verge of ending the drought. Sliding back into mediocrity now is NOT an option.

In each of the last two years an NL team changed managers in the midseason and rallied under new leadership to make the playoffs. Maybe this year the Cubs will be that team.

Yes, I've officially joined the Dusty Busters.

Here's a thought: instead of pinch-hitting Macias--ever--in any situation, why not PH Zambrano or Prior when they're not pitching? Both those guys are better hitters than Gremlin. As is Rusch, though since he's now a bullpen guy, you can't use him as a PH.

Over the last two years, Z has averaged a .230 BA and .335 SLG, and .600 OPS. OK, not so great, but is Gremlin matching that? Prior hit .250 with a .617 OPS in 2003, his numbers were much poorer last year but we know he was injured.

And of course, Wood has pop with the bat, with 7 career HRs, though his lifetime average is only .169.

I'm just sayin'........

The Padres did the same type of stupid thing the other day. Tim Redding was stinking up the place in the first 3 innings. Bottom of the 3rd, Redding's spot is up with the bases loaded in a close game. Instead of using Woody Williams or Adam Hyzdu to pinch hit for him, he k's ugly to kill the rally. Top of the 4th, Redding loads up the bases, and THEN Bochy goes to the pen.

I knew he had nothing after the first 3 innings. Most everyone else should have seen it as well. Why waste a golden opportunity to score some runs and get a semi effective reliever into the game to attempt to win it?

I was hoping to get a scene with Strawberry, Burns, and Homer at the ballpark, but I thought this did the job. Macias' face was destined for Homer, but maybe another time.

Kerry Wood reports a tight shoulder in pre-game warm-ups.

He pitches through the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, with Rusch warming up, Wood bats.

Wood is lifted to pitch the sixth.

:?:

While I don't necessarily blame Dusty, why the hell is Kerry pitching in short sleeves when his shoulder is tight and its around 35 degrees? In light of his shoulder troubles earlier, his comfort be damned. Try some long sleeves, Kerry.

Sometimes it's like Wood just doesn't think.

Furthermore, if Wood is going to come out of the game anyway, why risk injury by having him hit? That's one of the few situations I wouldn't mind sacrificing an at-bat by using Macias if Dusty wanted to save the real pinch hitters for later in the game.

Using a guy who is hitting .380 to sac bunt, trying to get Hairston to 3rd base in the 4th inning of a 1-0 game. The wind is blowing out at 20 mph. WTF are you doing playing for the game-tying run with the heart of your lineup coming up?

Dusty is bad enough, but now he's taking on Don Baylor's worst habit as well.

It's such a contradiction. He plays Neifi and hits him 2nd because he's hot, yet has him bunt often because he knows that Neifi isn't good.

I think giving Macias multiple at bats in a game would qualify for this thread.

I actually don't have that big a problem with Macias getting a start. If you're going to have him on the roster, I don't mind him getting a start one out of every 20 games or so. His presence on the roster is the real problem.

I guess I don't mind him starting now and then, but I definately think Macias should be pursuing another proffesion such as McDonalds or Burger King.

I wouldn't trust Macias with the Fry-o-Lator.

Pitching Chad Fox on back to back days when the team has a 6 run lead blowing a chance to get Leicester some much needed work. And, oh yeah, hurting a guy with a history of elbow problems (though it looked like a shoulder to me).

Edit: Up to this point I wouldn't have considered myself a Dusty hater. I don't blame him for some of the situations that haven't worked out, but before he walked two guys, gave up a bomb, and hurt himself, I was asking why Fox was even in the game when Jon Leicester hasn't seen much action lately. Stupid move, Dusty.

While I would have used Leicester there (simply so that Fox would be available tomorrow), a major league reliever needs to be able to pitch three one-inning outings on consecutive days.

Yeah, I had a major problem with the way the bullpen was used today. Dusty should have kept Wuertz in for the 8th, especially with a 4-run lead. And with a 7-run lead, I'd have preferred Leicester, with Fox or Hawkins just in case.
