What am I missing here? Aren’t all 50/50 raffles funded by the fans? Or are you talking about something else? I do understand the prices for concessions are outrageous. But I never buy anything at a game. I go to a game to watch the game. PERIOD! It amazes me how people can buy an $11 bud. And buy 3-5 a game. But in fairness to the Cubs or any sports team, your ticket does come with a 2 drink minimum. You don’t have to drink or eat at the game. I go to too many games to then spend an extra $100 for me and my wife to eat and drink at it. We either go out after the game or before the game.
As for Wrigley having advertising all around the park, it is no didfeeent than any other park. Again, if they aren’t doing it they are losing money they can make.
I do understand Stratos comment in the LED lights. And I would prefer it wasn’t a thing. But then I have a couple I sell some of my games to that love them. Stay to sing at the end of the game and watch the light show. I don’t get it. It isn’t for me, but I honestly couldn’t care less if they were there or not. As I said, I go to the park to watch the game. During that time, nothing outside of the game matters to me.

We already have one guy who talks in riddles. Do we really need another. I asked about the 50/50 raffle. You complained about it. Is it done differently elsewhere? Or do fans buy tickets and split the raffle with the charity the team donates to, at all parks? And, again, you don’t have to play the raffle.

The gross part is they take your money, donate it acting like it's some big act of charity and then take the tax deduction on your donated money. I know lots places do this like high school sports events, but one is a billion dollar company and the other is not.

The horsefeathers people find to complain about.

If you ran a billion dollar company, you would do the same thing.

I wouldn't,  which is why I hate the Ricketts and haven't been to Wrigley for the better part of a decade despite only living an hour away.

Yes you would. How do you think billionaires become billionaires? By throwing money away? Every dollar has a purpose.

Exactly. And the thing is, no one says you have to play the raffle. I would think people should be happy money is going to a charity. As you said, when people hate someone they can find a lot of things to bitch about regarding that person. But the reality is that is what business people do. I hate corporate America too. But to me, that is an entirely different topic for a different venue.

I don't know if I'm getting older and it matters less to me, but this was the least enjoyable Cubs season I can remember since 2010-2013. Absolutely no reason to enjoy after April. The worst part for me is that it was by design.

The Ricketts have drained almost all of my fandom.

This was the first season in a long time that I never made it to Wrigley not even once.

The 50/50 raffle thing is an extremely weird thing to complain about in a Cubs-centric way. It’s been standard across professional sports for years now.

All the other stuff isn’t cubs centric either. Beers are expensive, there’s advertisements at the stadium, lights flash occasionally…you guys just don’t like modern baseball.

The point of this thread isn't to talk about money or achieving win prognostications - it's about the sheer ugliness of the baseball which was played by the Chicago Cubs in 2024.

Purists love a 1-0 nothing game. However, we had great starting pitching day after day after day but still lost 2-1, 3-2, 1-0. The daily lack of hitting just got more and more frustrating, and then it WAS COMBINED with us blowing the save and then losing (you guessed it) 2-1, 3-2. So we couldn't hit, and when we did eke out enough we couldn't close the deal. That's not pure baseball - it was pure ineptitude. Who could have faith in a lousy team like that?

What season-long roller coaster? We were out of it by June.

They rallied to get within 3 games of the wildcard - that lasted about a week, and then they collapsed back into non-contention. Who was fooled into thinking that was real?

The offense was as perplexingly bad as in 2020, but we still made the playoffs that year; that year when everyone was an idiot in a topsy-turvy world when Jason Heyward was truly our best hitter.

Hector Neris became the Nefi Perez of the bullpen: "Why is this guy still being used?" Neifi actually posted a 2.4 WAR his one year as a starter - don't insult Neifi's memory by comparing him to Neris!

The high hopes for Chris Morel - aka God's happiest idiot - were dashed. Not that anything could harm his gaiety.

The end of the season stat-padding for "lost at sea for 2 halves=one season" Swanson.

Cool Cody Bellinger being half the player he was last season, but still getting $30 million for 3 years. He looks like he's lighting up a doobie and is just fine with his 2024 campaign - that didn't work out.

How do you go from being a gold glover in Japan to dropping little league fly balls, Seiya? I guess you're just a DH, but you're not the great DH we needed....

Nico's gonna finish 18th in the NL in batting average - wow, that's really pretty good! Problem is, it's not 1983 - you only hit .276. How does a 200-lb man hit only 7 home runs all year? He's got 25 lbs on Musial?!

Counsell is as dull as a cheese curd, and he hardly revolutionised the Cubs team, as promised.

Soft team. No heart. Only Steele shows some fire. Needs a player like Bryce Harper to remind them they are taking this foolish game too seriously, and not taking it seriously enough. Ross had fire, at least.

A hearty and lusty Booooooooooooo to this team, which will not be missed. I hope they all have a lousy offseason. Maybe go try selling insurance, like they used to have to do, to get your priorities straight and come back in 2025 not looking so very, very blecccch.

So much if this is just a rambling nonsense. But one point in particular, that I would like to make is Suzuki is 18th in baseball in OPS this year. He is a very fine DH. And if you go back to August on 23’ Suzuki is a top 10-15 hitter in the game. They need another big bat. But Seiya is a big bat.

Could be worse....the White Sox has not done anything since 2005.

Now that they have the most losses in an MLB season,  their fans need to keep their mouths shut when it comes to the Cubs.

They won’t though. It is their fan base.

Oh wow, top 15 for 5 weeks of a 26-week season? That sounds like the Sooz (MLB version) so far.

It's about as non-impressive as Nico finishing 18th in NL BA.

Expected more from the Cubs in 2024! Got blecch from them, and blecch from your post.

Top 10 for a full year and and 2 month of a season is much more impressive than 5 weeks. Again, your rambling is just pure nonsense.

The Cubs sound guy started playing the track "Sweet Emotions" by Aerosmith over the speakers when Kyle came off the mound for the last time and gave the teammates hugs in the dugout and gave the curtain call.  C'mon sound guy, just let the moment breathe and play out.

Man Stratos, you take issue with a lot of things that don’t really matter. I know you are much younger than me, but you are way more like the old man yelling to get off his lawn then I ever want to be. Come in man. Stick to Cubs baseball. Let that other stuff go. It really isn’t a big deal. You are going to have high blood pressure and other issue as you do get to my age if you let so many things that don’t matter, neither you. You have to have the most non baseball related negative posts than anyone here. Just relax and enjoy baseball😀

Crazy how bringing back essentially the same roster resulted in exactly the same record.  Funny how that works.  Maybe third time's a charm!

What do they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

Just curious...how many starting players would you guys like to see changed for next year? How about SP to start the year? RP?

------------------ ETA

I'm looking for a percentage here. Like would 33% be enough change? 25%? Or are you looking for like 75% new players?

Just as a reminder...Opening day players from this year:

  • 3B - Madrigal
  • DH - Morel
  • CF - Bellinger
  • C - Yan Gomes

I guarantee we go into next year with at least 33% of the opening day lineup turned over from last year. There's a good chance it'll be at least 44%. But go ahead and keep talking about bringing back the same team. It is funny stuff.

I expect Bellinger to opt in, which means that the current starting 9 are all under contract for 2025. Unless we're trading some of those guys away, I expect far less than 44% change (from today, not from opening day)
