Most likely nothing at all besides rumors and Cubs scouting doing their due diligence, but we don't have a lot to look forwards to this deadline so let's chat on some more scenarios that most likely aren't going to happen. Fire away -

Gotta walk away from a deal with the Dodgers with Rushing even if you have to eat money and add prospects or a reliever on our end(assuming it's Happ) to make it happen.

Hoerner makes sense for them but I don't see an OF like Happ.  I think they are a VERY sensible Taillon suitor though, maybe the most.

I think Taillon is going to be the pivot point for the loser of the Skubal sweepstakes.

I've talked myself into just keeping Taillon at this point. Unless they're getting a 50FV back, I'd rather just have him

I'm indifferent. I see both sides of the coin with the positive/negative arguments. I do think the folks who are on the hard "keep him" side need to at least prepare for the chance he's getting moved. There's been enough smoke out there around him and it's yet to be shot down.

Hahaha I mean, I'm firmly team Keep Him but I don't think I need to do a lot of emotional preparation to properly handle a Jameson Taillon trade. It'd be fine.

I think ultimately the people that want to trade him are the same people that think the group of players signed for the next 2-3 seasons (Happ, Hoerner, Dansby, Seiya, maybe Cody, etc) aren't a good enough core to do anything substantial, which is a different argument but if you're in that boat then we should probably be looking at a fire sale more than just one semi-big trade.

Has there been any indication that Happ would waive his NTC?  From what I've read he has that NTC in his contract for a reason and doesn't want to go anywhere.  Until I hear otherwise, I'm taking any Ian Happ rumors with a giant grain of salt.

There's way more transients for him to murder in the LA area, and you don't have to stab through such thick winter coats. He'd be all over it.

Yeah, maybe I'm overindexing on what is otherwise a puff piece, but there was an Athletic article with quotes from him a few weeks back about how he knows he's not going anywhere at the deadline. That's why he signed the extension and got the NTC so he has that peace of mind.  Extremely skeptical that he would be going anywhere.

I'm betting it's all smoke and he's not going anywhere. However, if their was a pitch to get him to waive his NTC, it would be "Would you be open to playing for the Dodgers along side Ohtani, Freeman, Betts, etc and compete for the WS the next 2.5 years?".

Maybe!  Happ is a midwestern lifer who signed that extension coming off 71 and 74 win seasons, so my intuition is that if that was really important to him he would've at least tested FA.  Never know until the situation presents itself though.

Yeah I think all indications around Happ have been that the NTC was for personal reasons not for leverage like a lot of guys use them for.

I can't trust any source that references "all three levels" of a farm system.

Yeah I assume Happ isn't going anywhere and I'd like to think it would require a hefty return to consider dealing Hoerner.

That said, the Dodgers have some nice prospects and I wonder if Gavin Lux would be in play as a buy low option.

1296 PA's .247/.317/.372 94 wRC+ career slash line. Not really looking to add that to an offense that already struggles to score runs.
