I’m sorry but I really do not like him.  It’s a struggle every time I see him pitch.

Ya Leiter has not been good for a while. ERA on the rise to 5. But Dusty I mean Craig has to use “his boys”

The bullpen is bad, magnified by the offense’s inability to score runs, and contrasted with tremendous starting pitching to produce the maximum amount of annoyance. Oh, and I have quite a bit of money on the Cubs over 84 wins.

This is all 100% on Hoyer. Counsell is essentially playing a man down in the bullpen because they’re keeping a sympathetic roster spot for Hendricks. And Hoyer insists on signing reclamation projects for bullpen arms. Only year that kind of worked was in ‘22. Every other year it’s been garbage.

The team already has too many outfielders but I think this team could stand to try Canario or Davis.

Canario is out of options, so they are in a tough position with him.  It doesn't make sense to bring him back up unless he is going to get significant playing time, and there just aren't any openings.  Unless there is a long term injury at a corner spot, they probably just need to let him keep raking in AAA to maintain his value as a trade chip.

Letting your starting pitcher go more than 93 pitches. Tyson Miller. Hayden Wesneski. Hell, even Colten Brewer. I’m far from a CC hater, but that move was perplexing.

And that doesn’t ALSO mean Hoyer hasn’t failed everyone.

That really isn't the problem.  There are multiple other fresh bullpen arms.  Hendricks occupying the last spot in the pen isn't going to impact much.

Seriously though, how do you play 25 straight baseball games and only manage to have a 3+ run lead at any point of the game ONE TIME?

Even terrible teams have an outburst every once in awhile. The Cubs go almost entire months without having any sort of comfortable lead at any point.

edit: yes this is my new negative stat that I’m going to obsess over so feel free to ignore me lol. Here are the 4 I’m obsessing over now:

1. Losses after having a lead in the 8th inning later - believe we’re at 9

2. Times when the starter leaves the game tied or with the lead and the bullpen immediately blows it in the first inning they are in the game.  - I lost track, I need to go back and check on where we’re at here

3 and 4 are very similar.

3. Lack of wins by more than 2 runs - 3 such wins in their last 43 games

4. Lack of having a lead of more than 2 runs at any point in the game. - as mentioned has happened 1 time in the last 25 games.

today was so close to hitting all 4 of these, however the cubs blew their lead in the 7th, not the 8th. Disappointing

There are multiple ways to be a bad baseball team.  The Cubs have chosen the most aggravating way possible by being in virtually every single game they play.  Either they're up by 1-2 runs and hanging on for dear life or they're down by 1-2 runs and a hit or two away from coming back.  90% of their games are like this, and 75% of those games end with the Cubs losing (estimates).

I've tried to just distance myself from watching but literally every single game they suck me back in by being in a winnable situation.  They are not a team that's gonna just lose 9-0.  It's always 3-2 or 4-3 or 4-2.

I'm really not as miserable as I sound but damn they are a very annoying and frustrating team to be a fan of right now.

Which wouldn’t be the end of the world if it wasn’t for the fact that that type of thing has been happening all year long to all of our starters.

I know its time for UMFan to shut the horsefeathers up, but just for comparison purposes, over the White Sox last 25 games, they've had a 3+ run lead in 7 different games, held for 24 total innings compared to the Cubs having a 3+ run lead in 1 game for 7 total innings.  I'll chill about this now (for now), I'm just in complete awe about this.

Baseball from 1924 I think.

I did enjoy PCA going first to third on the Gomes bunt.

That was Counsell conceding that Wisdom, PCA, and Gomes aren't good enough to hit this guy or likely even put the ball in play off him.

It worked out luckily but that's pretty embarrassing.

When your roster is a coin flip fringe playoff contender predicated on complimentary pieces who’d be bottom of the order hitters on league heavy weights, strategically you look to sell these expendable pieces to acquire farm talent at the deadline and not rely on a bunch of Kirk Cousins as your core.

who on this team couldn’t be replaced in the offseason by players of similar value?

jed is sacrificing the future to skate around 500 <5> games. Directionless garbage.

The Cubs are literally the only large market team that doesn’t have a single star player

Yankees - Soto, Judge

Red Sox - Devers (not quite a star, but consistently pretty dang good)

Phillies - Harper, Turner

Mets - Lindor, Alonso

Angels - Trout

Dodgers - Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, Smith

Rangers - Seager

The direction seems clear.  Behave like a small market team and hope for enough luck on the marginal players to dangle the potential for success in front of the fans.

I thought Jerry only owned one Bulls and Whitesox too.
