Curious if this is for Canario with the string of lefties passed or for Happ going on the IL

Mervis over Canario vs RHP is an easy call.

Canario and Wisdom in lineup vs LHP unless Madrigal plays 3b where Morel then DHs.  I think I saw Cubs are killing LHP so far.

This is very true. Do so earlier too. Look how long Hosmer stuck around. And he was way worse than Cooper. Mancini stayed even longer and he was worse than Cooper. A quick move tells me they actually believe this team can be good and are not going to wait around like they did last year. Good to see.

I know this is very on brand for me, but....Hosmer had a 234/280/330 line after all of 31 games. We cut him and everyone was pumped to bring up Mervis and then he put up a noticeably worse line: 167/242/289. Making moves for the sake of making moves =/= improvement.

They shouldn’t have wasted a dime on Hosmer. Every single person knew he was getting DFA’d once we signed him. He was trash with absolutely no upside. Mervis should’ve started with the team to be eased in instead of being called up, where there was a ton of pressure on the kid to produce right away after we had already wasted 31 games on a black hole. I will never agree to these dumpster signings over giving a guy with upside a chance. We see it over and over where a young kid struggles his first go around. Literally every single year this happens to multiple prospects. Sometimes they don’t work out, but I’m giving ABs to the prospect over someone like Hosmer 100% of the time.

This seems almost entirely revisionist history (Hosmer out OPSed Bellinger by 60 points in 2022), but also it's probably not worth relitigating. So, sure.

It’s not, but I don’t believe you were on PSD where we discussed the Hosmer signing ad nauseam. Come on, Hosmer vs Belli is Apples to Oranges, and you know that. That’s just such a terrible comparison. And I agree, this argument isn’t worth relitigating. We obviously have completely different views on how/where the Cubs should spend their resources, and that’s fine.

Well, the Mervis call up at the cost of Cooper getting DFA'ed means they must really like what he's been doing in the minors. Hope it's the start of a good big league career.

I wonder if there's a RP kind of on the outs that they like who they will trade Cooper for.

Michael Tonkin of the Mets?

Didn’t you make that comment about Wisdom, Cooper and Tauchman. Didn’t you suggest all would be gone? Maybe you did say it when Mastrobuoni was on the team. But I thought Wisdom was here already. Honestly everyone says so many things, definitely including me, I can’t keep things straight. Either way I guess Cooper makes sense with Wisdom up. Made little sense to keep them both. But I doubt Madrigal or Tauchman get sent down and replaced with better. Right now IMO this is the best 13 they could field. When Suzuki comes back I would like to see Canario down and go with All the other guys and Suzuki.

Didn't think I'd say this Rcal, but Morel is looking more and more like an adequate 3rdbaseman? I hope this doesn't come back and bite.

It was before Wisdom because I figured one would be gone for Wisdom, which ended up being Mastrobuoni.

I think Tauchman is safe, but not anytime soon I just dont think Madrigal will make it through July.  Outside of being a safe guard for 3B in case Morel totally flops there, he really doesn't provide much else for them, I could see maybe another kid coming up in June or July to replace him on the bench then.

Canario is likely to be odd man out when Suzuki returns,  I agree there

Now if he could just look like an adequate offensive third baseman…

Seems like when he started fielding better he stopped hitting.

I'm surprised about the Cooper move.  He isn't an exciting player by any means, but I would say he has been about what he was expected to be and did fine in a limited role.

I think this move says more about the Cubs' confidence in Busch than anything else.  Cooper was insurance in case Busch didn't take off right away, but clearly Busch isn't going anywhere.  Plus, with Wisdom also able to fill the right handed corner infield role, Cooper became even more redundant.

I hope Mervis has success this time around, He earned another shot, but I still don't think the Cubs have a lot of faith in him as a Major League player.

He's obviously there for his glove.

I'm betting Cooper forced it. He is playing well enough to get more playtime with another team.

Since 4/8, 32 PA with a 207/281/207 line. Cooper was absolutely fine in his role and had the huge game against the Rockies early on, but I find it extremely hard to believe the guy would force his way off a big league club after not landing a guaranteed big league deal this off-season. I still think the Red Sox is a likely landing spot with all their injuries.
