"Can be traded."

Bro... a PoBO that started a "rebuild" 4 seasons ago is not going to tear it down and start over before anything is even built.

I guarentee you that at least 6 of these guys will be gone before the 2027 season.

I guarantee you if that is the case then Jed Hoyer is gone before 2027.

Pretty sure everyone from PSD should know my feelings towards Jed Hoyer.

That being said, I dont see him being fired after this season. So if the Cubs do end up having a season like the Cardinals last year, I'm at least willing to hear him out and see what he does to respond as far as player additions. But if its the same tired horsefeathers its ever been since he took over in that the Cubs are not going to be a player for top tier talent and build with "intelligent spending" then he can go shine Epstein's shoes again.

Probably could be, his contract is up after 2025. He'll have this deadline, offseason,  and next deadline to do something.

You realize, 4 contracts will be expired after 2026 season.  Hoerner,  Happ, Bellinger,  and Suzuki if they all are still with the team at the start of 2026.

I think it's unlikely any of them gets an extension.

That leaves Amaya, Busch, and Morel that will be entering Arb years.

Maybe Morel and Busch stays until then, depending on how they continue to play, Amaya will likely be gone though.

I do realize that. I also realize you are talking about a handful of 3 WAR players and not every single one of them is going to get dumped. MLB does allow teams to give out these things called contract extensions.

This roster is not as bad as they are playing right now. They are definitely missing a keystone player, however. They need a thumper, or two, in the middle of the lineup to stretch it out. And a bullpen that doesn't suck complete ass.

As I said, I doubt any of them four gets an extension,  maybe Hoerner but that would be it of the 4 currently under contract.

This should be his benefit of the doubt season. He got the Manager he wanted and pushed the payroll up against the tax and the team is in danger of being last place in the worst division in the league. Ricketts will probably just let him play out his lame-duck season and start anew. A part of me could see Jed resigning also; he looks like total horsefeathers, I bet his body is taking a beating.

Looking at fWAR, the Cubs have two players on pace to hit 3 fWAR for the season, Shota and Busch.

Not a great roster. They're playing the same game that all of the other Chicago teams play. They try to hang around playoff contention for as long as possible to keep selling tickets but they don't really care.

Ricketts will keep Jed because he won't want to pay two guys for the same job.

I think this is really underselling the talent on the team.  Something is definitely wrong with them right now, but this is a team full of guys who have put up 3-5 WAR seasons who haven't all just suddenly gotten old or forgotten how to play.  They have to regress to the mean at some point.

Do you think they will finish the year with 2 players reaching 3 fWAR?

Saw this one this morning on Fansided:

Braves get Belli

Cubs get Smith-sawver & guanipa

Forget it? Or, might as well? Or, who gives a horsefeathers?

He was tradeable for trey mancini. Got to be good enough return for belli

He's a 45+ and Baltimore's #8 prospect. If you think we're getting more than that you're kidding yourself.

According to the Athletic, in an article co-authored by Patrick Mooney (which likely gives the credentials), the Yankees and Rangers are specifically mentioned as teams eyeing the Cubs, and more specifically, Cody Bellinger. There's nothing really of note outside of that; no names coming back discussed, nor any real mention of how likely the Cubs would be to consider it.

In year 4 of a rebuild, Theo had us contending for a pennant.

In year 4 of a retool, jed has us picking horsefeathers with the chickens

Part of me wants to buy low on Rocker coming off TJS, but I don't think Bellinger could even get that done.

Bellinger in a walk year probably brings back something in the neighborhood of what we got for Rizzo/Bryant/Javy?  But the downside those options introduce can't imagine those options...I can't imagine a deal coming together.  Maybe the Yankees consider Bellinger at Yankee Stadium such a likely cheat code that it's worth it?
