Smyly blows ass.

The Cubs have about 8 better SP options, so there is no reason for Smyly to even be in consideration for a spot.  It's bullpen or nothing for him.  I'm fine giving him a shot as the lefty bullpen guy, but hopefully he has a short leash.

It was 28 innings, but he was probably our second best reliever on a per inning basis last year of anyone who got any substantial time. I'm not good enough at Fangraphs to sort by just his relieving innings and then look at LHB/RHB splits, but he got a lot of Ks and generally kept the ball in the park. Fine with them treating him as a starter in spring training in the event of multiple injuries or whatever, but he'd have to blow up a lot more than once to take him out of the opening day bullpen for me.

I like that they are giving Mervis a lot of ABs. He has not taken advantage of the opportunity to this point.

Lol he's gotten on base in 7 of his 14 PAs

That's just not true?  Amaya didn't get called up until May and still played in more than 50 games despite Gomes having a good year.  We'd expect his playing time to grow this year as part of his natural progression and because Gomes may not be as good as he was in 2023, not because Ross was holding him back.

Eh I'd say coming in as a defensive replacement isnt consistent playing time. Ross was definitely holding him up.

33 starts at catcher and his season started on game 31 of the year, so basically got a little under 25% of the starts. Like most people here, hope it's closer to a 50/50 split in 2024.

Yeah he was REALLY good in relief.  Unless he's injured or velo is way down or something there's no reason to not let him at least open the season in that role again.

Is that an evidentiary example of his poor play at 3rd?

Nah, I should of mentioned too that he first looked to throw to 2B to get the force there and he probably just tried to rush getting ball to hand

Yeah that would be best, really hope they stay away from the 3 catcher business tho

No one is going to want him unless the Cubs dump a pile of cash to go along with him. I agree, ST doesn't mean anything. He's definitely not a starter and they are short on LH guys, so he's on the team.

He went to Driveline this winter, did he show an improvement on his fastball? Or was he knocked put too quickly to observe?

Who are the goofballs in the booth?

I think that it's Ryan Sweeny (Sweenis?) and a Thom Brennaman sound alike
