Feeding into my paranoia about Caleb/Fields, a 32 year old WR on a 1 year contract is a very win now move. Would he be making win now moves for a rookie QB, even one as hyped as Caleb? (I know, would you be making win now moves if you had a ****** passing QB is also a valid question but this is under the assumption that Poles believes Fields is the guy)

I dunno guy wants to build through the draft, now has just 4 picks. Trades for a guy whose contract comes off the books right when a potential large extension is due.

Please stop me if I’m being insufferable about this, I’m just really paranoid about making a franchise altering poor decision.

Maybe a dumb take but why didn't they sign Mike Williams instead of trading a pick for Allen?

Mike Williams makes Keenan Allen look like Lou Gehrig when it comes to durability I suppose. Also re: my point above maybe having 1 year left on his deal is seen as a positive not a downside for Poles.

I would bet there’s extension talks in the near term, something that keeps him here for a couple years

Yeah I’m reading now that he was trying to get an extension done with the chargers. I assume the Bears traded for him knowing that.

Just please don’t horsefeathers this up Bears

If Poles was going to trade 1.1 he would have done it before free agency.

I was thinking about FA signings at WR and the possibility they command more than DJ Moore. Next thought is extending DJ. The smart trend is to extend earlier rather than later to avoid the inflation. The Montez Sweat contract already ages well compared to Brian Burns. When does this FO extend DJ?

If I’m Caleb Williams and the undisputed #1 pick in the draft and Justin Fields is as bad as you say he is, I like my chances. A lot.

we’ll see

Redshirting implies it's not a competition.

Why do you say that?  The teams that would trade up for Caleb are still very much in position. Just today Washington traded Sam Howell for a 3rd Round pick. They now have 6 picks in the top 100 of this draft. If Poles was looking to trade down, the Commanders would be perfectly positioned to give the Bears high picks in this draft.

Of course they could also be stockpiling top 100 picks to build out their roster for Daniels/Maye. Just saying, if Caleb is available I don’t think they’ll have trouble getting a sizable offer.

Yeah, we're 100% trading down from 9, and probably trading down two more times with the picks we get from trading down.

If he can turn the 1st 4 picks into his starting qb, #2 wr, top DE and another impact receiver/tackle he might be happy with that over the depth picks might provide

Fields was redshirted and forced his way into the starting role against someone I think you claimed was a better QB than Justin, Dalton

shouldn't be THAT hard for Caleb

My memory is fuzzy. Didn't Fields and Dalton just trade injuries back and forth?

I want to see Poles sign Clowney or Young. Young is just 24 and even if he will never be quite the menace that was expected he's still a really good player.

Clowney and Sweat would be a great tandem with both being stout run defenders and above average against the pass also. On a 1 or 2 year deal Poles should be all over him.

Keenan Allen? Well, alright then, I see you Mr. Poles.

Setting the table for Caleb Williams is a good thing. If Caleb had reservations about playing in Chicago, just look at his WR and those reservations should be gone.

I think we all agree that 9OA is 99% gone. The question is: how many trade downs? I could see Poles trading down multiple times.

Over under 1.5 trade downs from 9

Here's the deal (in my best Biden voice). The Chargers were over the cap. They already cut Mike Williams and let other players walk that they likely would have kept around, Everett for example. They were going to have to cut one of Bosa, Mack or Allen. Turns out, Bosa restructured and Allen was going to be cut. The Bears swooped in and gave them a 4th rounder. Both teams win. Chargers get a draft pick, Bears get a guy that was never going to sign with them if he was released.

This benefits the Bears another way, too. If you want Odunze or Nabers still, one of those guys is almost guaranteed to be there at 9. It's now down to AZ, LAC and NYG to draft WR in the top 8. Atl has stocked their WR room with London, Mooney and Moore, so it would be quite strange for them to draft there. Tenn picked up Ridley and still has Hopkins and that dude they drafted two years ago that likes to be hurt. They need Oline protection more than they need another WR. QB's are going 1,2,3 and then MHJ 4th. Falcons and Titans are probably not going WR and either one or both the Chargers and Giants should or need to trade down. My prediction is Minnesota trades up to 5 to take the threat of drafting McCarthy way from Denver and LVR. So, the Bears could still get one of those top 3 WR's at 9.

However, I think Keenan is such an improvement to the WR room, I now think Poles pivots to DE and trades back at 9 for Turner, Latu or Verse. He picks up a better pick in the trade down than he gave up for Keenan. The WR class is so strong, he can still get a Center in the 3rd, a DL with the added pick and a WR in the 4th. Sign another veteran WR to compete with Scott and the rookie for WR3 and 4.

I'm am so excited about this pickup. Allen is not really injury prone. He had over 100 catches in his age 31 season. They have the option of extending him or letting him walk and they have all of their draft picks for next year to continue getting more weapons for Williams.

Swift and Johnson catching balls out of the backfield, Kmet and Everett catching balls out of the TE position, Moore and Allen and possibly some other stud WR in the draft while also fixing the Center position spells good things for the passing game this year. We might just have our first 4000 yard passer this year.

Will Tyler Scott start a bidding war for #13 in Chicago or will he be a nice young man and give it up. And who gets it? Williams or Allen?

Do the Bears still consider going after Mike Williams as a WR3?

Do the Bears really want the entire Chargers starting passing attack from last year? No. Williams is very injury prone, and I'm not sure it's in the budget to pay Williams what he'll be asking for.

I think you can probably expect someone along the lines of a Donovan Peoples-Jones or Laviska Shenault type of budget minded WR to battle it out with the rookie draft pick and Tyler Scott for playing time. Might even bring back ESB.

I can’t imagine they’d consider it. Presumably they want to supplement the top guys with some youth, especially since you can’t assume either of these guys will be here in 3 years.

108 catches and he missed freaking 4 games. He's pretty much a lock to catch 70% of his targets. Moore caught 70% last year, too. Goddamn, when healthy those 2 together are gonna be a nightmare for DCs.

I wanna say that his injury last year was concussion related. I feel like I saw the hit and that it was brutal. I could be wrong, though.

ETA: Nope. AC Joint/Shoulder sprain
