Yeah, but also some blame for not walking away sooner, perhaps. The team ended up with decent enough returns for those two, but I felt at the time that the core was sold off a little too late.

While winning 90 games plus a year he really couldn’t sell. That would have been an awful look/decision if he did.

Not exact, but equivalent from us would be something like Polanco for:

Drew Smyly

Julian Merryweather

James Triantos

Brody McCullough

I know Trueblood thinks he couldn't handle 3B but I'm not sure it's that definitive so I probably have done this deal.  Definitely would have wanted to if we hadn't pulled down Busch already.

On the cubs off-season chit chat thread. Good spot for it

Considering Polanco was discussed here multiple times as a possible trade target, why yes, it was a good spot for it.

So I should come here once a day and sift through 2-3 new pages of old men complaining every time the cubs don't sign someone while espousing horsefeathers political views on the off chance that there's a transaction announcement concerning other teams?

Question?  Since the Cubs offered Bellinger a qualifying offer, do they lose a draft pick if they resign him?

Welcome!  The Cubs do not lose a pick if they sign Bellinger, but they don't gain the extra pick that they would gain if another team signed him.

My belief is that 5 years of Morel is much more valuable than 1 year of Bieber.

I think that it would be Morel for Bieber + someone like, Alex Clemmey.   Morel is worth much more than Bieber on his own.

I think Morel and maybe Wisdom is fair for Bieber and Naylor. Maybe a small cubs add, if need be. But not much. Morel for Bieber isn’t even close, IMO.

Don't give up the fight.  It's a lonely hill to die on, but I'm with you!

Rcal. I know you were a big proponent for a Polanco/cub acquisition.

Just judging by the player cost,  seattle thinks quite highly of their new infielder.

I think Jed is tickled to have Busch play first. I don't believe he makes the trade.

Lovelady has been a decent pro pitcher, random player I’ve noticed since he was a prospect with the Royals. Had that Ethan Roberts thing where he was obvy RP only but was putting up da numbahs often over multi-inning outings. Guy’s allowed just 6 HRs in 200+ MiLB innings with a 28% K rate, weird delivery and I’ve seent him hit 97 (like 5 years ago) from that lower slot

Is it a MiLB deal or MLB? (Edit: MiLB, good stuff)

cubs have signed 4 - 28 yearold leftys this offseason for their pitch lab. Lovelady has a difficulty staying healthy?

We could have thrown in Madrigal and restructured the players we gave up, like include him instead of the Topa/Merryweather-type reliever and maybe give them a prospect not quite as good as Triantos, like BJ Murray.

Me thinks the Cubs know they could use another LHP in the pen besides Smyly/Little and are signing some guys to find one.  They may be done adding MLB guys to the pen and won't acquire a lefty on a MLB contract.  Or maybe it's just for depth, hard to say.

There's still a chance that Smyly wins the 5th SP spot out of ST and then they could use another lefty if Little isn't ready for some reason.  Never know.

Cubs sign Dick Lovelady, we need Harry for when he takes the mound 😅😅😅

Sounds like a character from a James Bond movie.

#1 - The Cubs most likely already have 3 lefties in the rotation without Smyly.

#2 - Did you watch Smyly's starts last year?  If he is even in consideration for a starting spot, then what are we even doing here?

I think this is setting up perfectly for a Chapman to San Francisco and Cody Bellinger to Chicago situation barring a team like the Angels or whatever coming in at Boras' price.

I'm not upset to lose out on Turner at that price. His value at this point is basically whatever is left in his bat, and it's showing some signs of age-related decline. He could bounce back, certainly. J.D. Martinez did last year. But Turner is 39. Each year that goes by makes it increasingly likely that he just falls off a cliff.
