On ESPN, they announced the 4th pick.  Then it cut to the host going to commercial saying "and thats the first change in the order with Columbus picking 3rd, so it will either be Chicago or Anaheim picking first" or something like that.  It was clearly a weird mistake like they played the wrong thing at the wrong time or something.  Then they came back and hadn't revealed any of the top 3 yet.

I was so confused during that commercial break. Obviously they knew the results ahead of time

Yeah they did, I heard it too

Guess I missed it, and when they came back from commercial, he announced it like no one knew

Or, you know, it was taped and someone screwed up the editing.

Yeah, that was bizarre as hell. The actual selection has already taken place so people knew.

Now the question becomes what they do next year. They'll probably have both Korchinski, Bedard and some other young players on the ice, so it's tough to believe they'll be immediately good. Do they maintain the patient approach or use their cap space to sign top FA and bring in players via trade?

I'm really hoping they learned their lesson from the all-in days with Bowman. Don't try to suck as hard as possible again, but take a measured approach to building.

We should trade the pick.

The only scenario I can see where I'd trade the pick is if Anaheim offered #2, #33 & next year's first. That's probably enough to make the the gap between Bedard and Fantilli.

They have two firsts and four seconds. Plus two firsts and two seconds each of 2024 and 2025. Maybe they’ll trade away a couple 2nds for actual nhl players to round out this roster.

I doubt there’s any motivation to get hyper aggressive this offseason, but they have space and should use it.

if they are any good at drafting the pipeline should stay full for the foreseeable future.

maybe they can give away a first to get rid of Seth Jones

In a different timeline, the league actually punishes Chicago for covering up sexual harassment and they aren't even picking in the first round

Yeah this FO does not seem like the type of Front Office thats going to accelerate their rebuild that drastically. Maybe the plan goes to 2025 instead of 2027 now

They still have Mrazec in net and zeitsev on D, two contracts that will Come off the books before they need to pay any kids.

I would expect them to go out and sign a top 4 D and/or top 6 F. Their current forwards cost less than $13 m combined. If they can convince a youngish star to be a part of the next wave, they should do it.

They have to spend to get to the salary floor.

I am admittedly a relatively uninformed hockey fan, but can someone explain why Kane is or isn't a good comp for Bedard?  They would seem to have similar size and skillsets, but Bedard is being labeled a "generational talent."  While Kane has been a great player for a very long time, I don't know that I would put him in that category.  So is there something about Bedard that makes people think he is another level above Kane, or is the comp simply not a valid one at all?

Easy answer: Kane is a generational talent and has performed that way in his career. He's arguably the best American player ever (at least in an argument with Chris Chelios), and is top 3 all time in every Blackhawks category, along with being the best player on a Cup contender for 10 years, and an easy top 5 player in the league from his rookie year until maybe this year.

Kane had major detractors at the beginning because at the time smaller, quicker stick handling wunderkinds had yet to begin dominating the NHL. Kane was also smaller than Bedard is now. Two decades of that type of player finding great success in the league and there’s fewer doubts. Bedard is probably better than Kane was at the time of their respective drafts, but that type of player is now more respected largely due to Kane’s career.

interesting about trading in quantity for quality

I don’t understand this at all. This roster is, somewhat by design, completely devoid of talent from top to bottom. Look at Edmonton with McDavid up to (and maybe including) this year. This isn’t the NBA, you need depth.

They still have plenty of picks over the next three years. Multiple in each of the top rounds. If you can add another top half pick this year by trading your other 1st and a 2nd or two, you could be getting another top 6 forward that will be ready by 2024.

what if the Russian falls to 5 and Montreal doesn’t want to take the risk?
