The kid is 17 years old, his entire childhood was framed around the Hawks being the best and most exciting team in hockey. And he's still way too young to understand all of the garbage parts of it.

(And he's a teenager raised as a once in a generation prodigy in a clearly toxic hockey culture with people fawning over him and enabling him at every turn, I certainly wouldn't bet on him being a 'good dude')

Pretty clear overpay here on short term. AA is not good but he is mildly productive and somebody that could be on a line with Bedard and/or Reichel although shouldn’t be a top 6 on a good team.

The Blackhawks and forward Andreas Athanasiou have agreed to a two-year contract with a $4.25 million cap hit, league sources confirmed to The Athleticon Wednesday. AA actually played pretty well at the end of the year as a center on the line with Reichel. This is the "fine", unexciting kind of signing we should expect this offseason. Plus taking on bad contracts for more assets to get to the floor.

It’s fine because it has no long term impact and they needed somebody to play there in the interim. But he wasn’t getting that money from anybody else. It’s also the type of contract they’ll be asked to take on, somebody with a cap hit over 4 for 2 years that you need yo upgrade from if you want to actually be a good hockey team.

Not directly relevant to the Hawks rebuild, for those that enjoyed gazing into his eyes, Patrick Sharp will be an advisor to the Flyers this season, and not a Blackhawks part time analyst.

The type of trade I assumed they needed to make, even if didn’t even consider the name. Assume Hall plays with Bedard. Interesting trading for a pending UFA as well, might overpay him to stay.

If you were playing this out on a video game, you could retain Hall's salary (or as much of it as the rules allow) and flip him for future assets. As it plays out in real life, you probably hold onto him to give Bedard someone to play with, and hope he maintains a high enough level to flip him at some point in the 24/25 season.

They signed Foligno for 1 year at $4m. Another short term overpay to fill out a depleted roster. He was a 4th liner and should be bottom 6, but on this roster he could theoretically play on the 2nd line with AA and Reichel.

They should pretty much be at the floor, and even though they still don’t want to get “too good” this year, they might as well try to optimize that cap space and take on somebody else’s problem.

would you puckheads lock in bedard into a kane quality career (minus the off ice stuff but quality/longevity are the same) or would you gamble on the upside

gimme the 50-70 goal seasons

but seriously, it would be hard to complain if he was "only" a first ballot HOF

Based on hype alone I'd say it would be slightly disappointing. Not that it's reasonable to expect him to be Gretzky, Crosby etc., but the way he's talked up is that he's a tier above Kane as far as a prospect goes.

Gimme that upside. Kane was great, when he was great, but Bedard should and could be better.

Bedard plays a much more important position than Kane does. He should be better as far as a player to build a franchise around.

Just trying to think of this from an NBA standpoint.  This may be laughably wrong but....

Kane at his peak had a Jason Tatum like stature.  Everyone respects him as a superstar, you can win championships with him as your top guy, he's in just about everyone's top 10 players list, but no one is calling him the best player in basketball.   Bedard's upside is more of Giannis/Durant.  Not quite prime LeBron but if all goes well he can be in the inner circle of hockey greats.

Flame away lol
