The Athletic has the Bears trading down twice

Colts for #4 and #35 and 1st round 2024

And

Carolina for #9, #61, and 1st round 2024

Giving them picks, 9, 35, 53, 61, and 64 and drafting Lukas Van Ness DL, Iowa at #9

For the Bears, this would be an outstanding scenario. By trading down twice, Chicago would own five picks in the top 64 this year (Nos. 9, 35, 53, 61 and 64) plus two additional first-rounders in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The storylines for this pairing would be fun. Van Ness grew up a Bears fan, living just outside of Chicago (Barrington, Ill.), and his girlfriend is the younger sister of Bears tight end Cole Kmet. More importantly, the Iowa defensive lineman is a promising player with the traits to be a disruptive force from multiple alignments.

General manager Ryan Poles believes in building for the long term, so adding an ascending talent like Van Ness and draft capital via multiple trade downs would fit the profile.

Maybe I'm greedy, but if the Bears are trading from 4 to 9, I'd be really disappointed if they didn't pick up #40 from Carolina.

As mentioned previously in the thread, I'm still getting up to speed on the non-Carter/Anderson DL prospects, but the talking heads seem to be all over the map with Van Ness (for better and for worse), and he's generally seen as an upside pick rather than an immediate impact guy. I'm intrigued, but not necessarily excited at the prospect of getting him at 9.

Van Ness would be a good pick with one of their 2nds, but at 9 I'm prolly taking the best available 3 tech, not an edge.

you absolutely cannot go best player at a specific position that early in the draft. That’s a great way to waste any value you have with top picks.

He actually played quite a bit of 3T at Iowa.

But Carolina wins that division if they get good QB play.

Does that make you less interested in trading with them?

Nope. I'll trade with anyone that pays the price.

Van Ness is trending toward the top 15 and the best available 3-tech at 9 will either Jalen Carter, who had an arrest warrant issued last week or IMO a guy like Calijah Kancey, who is not worthy of a top 15 pick.

Interesting thing at 9 becomes is a CB the best player on the board? Or do the Bears reach for Smith-Njigba, who they supposedly love and Fields obviously would love?

Saw the deleted Quentin Johnston post. I think Johnston is scary. He's probably still my WR1, but he has some very prominent flaws. I think he's one of the few true X WRs in this draft, and the Bears do need an X long-term, but I think in the short-term, they need a guy that can separate in the slot. Mooney and Claypool can both play the slot, but neither is a good full-time option there. Mooney's not a "go over the middle type" and Claypool was traded from the Steelers with down numbers because he was forced into the slot full-time. Obviously, it would be short-sighted to dismiss Johnston because of Claypool who likely only has 1 more year in Chicago. But those flaws could be something the Bears aren't willing to deal with.

If Carter is there at 9, I'd prolly draft him. He was racing, he has some growing up to do, but he's also an incredible talent. I don't put racing on the same level as what Watson was doing

I'll still believe a double trade down when I see it happen. Never seen that happen at the top of the 1st round, so seems too good to be true.

Edit: Nevermind, I just read the article and saw that this has happened twice before. I am still dubious but hey if they can pull it off thats amazing.

If it's ever going to happen again, the Bears find themselves in the best/worst circumstance to make it make sense. Also, the draft is deep at a number of positions, this helps too.

In that case, triple trade down go. Houston, then Indy, then lower end top 10 pick.

McShay's latest has the Bears doing a double tradedown with the Colts and the Raiders.

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/bears/todd-mcshay-mock-draft-has-bears-trading-twice-drafting-peter-skoronski

The returns seem light and I'm not a fan of Skoronski that high.

Yea, they only net (1) additional 1st rd pick while dropping 6 slots? No thanks. McShames reason is "well, tge have Justin Fields, they don't NEED a top 5 pick"

F-that, Poles NEEDS all the 1st rd picks he can get

JSN baby.

I'm warming up to the idea of the Bears trading down from 1, taking a DL in the Top 10, and then trading back up into the 20s from the top of the 2nd round (assuming they get 36 or 39 or 40, or some combination of those picks) to nab someone like JSN.

I'm not sold on him as a Top 10 guy, but somewhere like 25? Absolutely.

I don't think JSN will last that long.

I love JSN, but I agree. I don't love him top 10. 15-25 range would be more of his worth, but if they are absolutely in love with him and Fields wants him, I don't see many scenarios where he doesn't have a bunch of productive seasons in a good passing offense. Just gotta get that good passing part down.

Also, I gotta caution against falling in love with any singular prospect. There are other WRs that can be productive as well. If they wind up with someone like Zay Flowers, I couldn't care less where JSN goes. LOL

Flowers seems like Mooney 2

Yeah, I could see that. But I think he's a better route runner than Mooney and Mooney is a touch faster. Flowers is more of a slot guy and Mooney on the outside. But they are similar small, fast WRs.

The Ringer has a good article today about Poles' decisions as he attempts to trade 1.01 and the possibility of overplaying his hand. Of course its littered with Rounders references because its still a Bill Simmons website

If this was the best available offer, would you be happy if the Bears dropped all the way to 9th and also got the Panther's two 2nd-round picks and the 1st round in 2024?

Thinking on it, I'd be okay with it. The future 1st would be great since there's no guarantee Carolina will be good next year, and those 2nd round picks would be great in my "trade back into the 1st" scenario.

I want a ransom, but if that's what the market is, so be it.
