That is easily the worst check swing call I’ve seen in my entire life. Does it happen during the 2nd inning of a game in May? No it happens to end a freaking playoff series.

Didn’t look close to a swing live. Replay confirmed it. One of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in the playoffs. Probably not going to change the outcome but still inexcusable.

The two best teams in baseball, battled for the division title down to the last game of the season, came down to the last inning of the deciding game in the playoff series, and it was ultimately decided by the freaking umpire. That just can't happen.

rany jazayerli points out that, while the check swing non-strike that was badly called will dominate the conversation, the two terrible strike calls against bryant were a huge moment. if eddings calls either of those correctly the giants have men on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs, which has a run expectancy of 1.37 runs and results in a run scored more than half of the time. instead bryant ended up striking out with the count at 5 balls and 0 strikes, which puts the situation at runner on first with 1 out. that has a run expectancy 0.489. those two bad strike calls very well may have cost the giants a run, if not multiple runs, in a very low-scoring game.

Small picture, Flores was 0/18 with 9 Ks going into that AB against Scherzer, and definitely looked like it. Big picture, adopt the NCAA rule which actually puts a line (believe front of the plate or the batters front hip) and figure out some way to automate it. Shouldn't be too hard to throw a camera in every dugout that can get the angle right.

I just read this about check swing calls in MLB:

According to the MLB rule book, intent is the only thing an umpire measures to determine whether a batter went around or not. The play is not reviewable as it is considered by rule to be a judgement call.

So if true the angle that we're talking about is technically not the determination of a swing

Yeah and I think you need to change the rule. The NCAA has it as a certain point/line. It might mean hitters need to change their approach, but would still be better than the current set up.

You're ultimately just asking for automation. The ump screwed up the call, and whether the check swing rule was codified or not had no effect.

Yeah, this can be automated, also. Just put high angle cameras (on stadium roof or whatever) off to each side of the plate. If the bat passes the front of the plate, it was a swing. Done.

Call me crazy, but isn’t there “intent” in every check swing to actually swing the bat? And the “intent” to swing is then followed by the “intent” not to actually swing? I mean seriously, the ump is looking for intent??? Dumber than dumb.
