Excited about the potential for some conference semifinal action. Just curious. Where would the Bulls rank in the East if you replaced Demar Derozan with Jimmy Butler?

I would guess top 4 team in the East. Butler gets a lot of what you get from DeRozan offensively (imo) but is monumentally better defensively (or at least was when he was on the Bulls, I assume its still good). Bulls would still have depth issues but would be pretty solid imo.

Well yeah, and they wouldn’t have Lavine

Not good:

Laughable. When LeBron practically held a news conference begging AD to demand a trade to the Lakers, crickets.

Solution: make the NBA more like a normal labor market. The highest level players can negotiate contracts with expensive buyouts to tamper down too much team building, but otherwise just let the players dictate the league movements, even leaving existing contracts. Its probably what the fans want anyway.

Sounds like the trade for Ball is official. Does that mean the tampering investigation is over?

No. But it makes it much less likely that it will be voided. Bucks lost a 2nd round pick over Bogdanovic last season and they didn't even sign him. I would expect a fine and a loss of a draft pick.

I also doubt the deal is voided. Most likely a fine and a loss of 2nd-round pick(s) if the Bulls are found guilty of tampering.

The NBA can't really stop these type of deals from happening, and I think execs will just get better at hiding the process/negotiations with agents/FAs in the future.

There's whispers out there that the NBA is looking to make an example out of the Bulls because of how blatant it looks (Shams tweeting out at 5:00pm exactly that they agreed to a S&T). I wouldn't rule out losing a 1st round pick and paying a fine high enough for JR to tighten the purse strings a bit (somehwhat joking about the last part). Not having a 1st round pick in 4 out of 5 drafts would be rough.

My buddy is at this game and said p will is dominating.

Hmmm was just following the box score and saw he was 6-18 shooting. Not that shooting is the only gauge for how a player is performing, its just funny to see that and then read he's dominating.

his second half wasn't great

I weirdly recorded and watched a good chunk of the game. He was great early. The Pelicans defense was definitely paying most attention to PW and trying to stop him from getting to the spots he wanted to get to. He was great in the first half but seemed to run out of gas in the 2nd half. Loved seeing him take so many shots and handle the ball so much. Hopefully a sign of more aggression even when he’s on the court with players better than him.

Are you surprised that Lauri Markkanen is still a Bull? --- Ron H.

There’s a reason it’s called restricted free agency.

Remember how Zach LaVine signed an offer sheet from the Sacramento Kings when his restricted free agency began in 2018? The Bulls matched it, of course. But that’s the best option to move elsewhere if that’s what the player desires, which Markkanen has said he does. Sign an offer sheet and force your current team to make a decision.

With salary cap space dried up around the league — save for the Oklahoma City Thunder — Markkanen now needs the Bulls’ cooperation in a sign-and-trade. Thus, the Bulls have leverage and can be selective and demanding in their return. For now, they’ve made clear in all proposals they’ve fielded from teams — and I’m told up to four teams have presented scenarios — that they’re seeking at least a first-round pick and no bad long-term money.

It’s instructive to remember that both Artūras Karnišovas and Billy Donovan consistently have praised Markkanen publicly. And having a 7-footer who shot 40 percent from 3-point range come off the bench at a roughly $9 million salary, which is Markkanen’s qualifying offer, is surely appealing to the Bulls if their asking price isn’t met. It’s a fluid situation. Stay tuned.

I think it's probably best to just bring Lauri back, especially at that low a price. I was really high on him after his sophomore season with the Bulls, and I thought they would work out an extension but they were too far apart. Great shooter and very talented for a big man, but last season was obviously pretty disappointing... and now it seems like the Bulls' FO wants to go with Patrick Williams at PF, or even DeRozan at the 4 in a small-ball configuration.

Very excited about the Bulls and they should definitely make the playoffs (with better health/less injuries this year hopefully). If they decide against bringing Lauri back I'd be down for adding Paul Millsap as the backup PF.
