Gase firing is official.

The really interesting coaching decision has become LA Chargers. They finished 7-9 on a 4-game win streak. Justin Herbert is the best rookie QB ever statistically, and the assumption is Lynn (an offensive coach) had some say in drafting and/or developing him. Lynn is clearly not a good game day coach, as his team has lost in miserable ways the last few years. But 7-9 with OT losses to KC and NO, a last play loss to Denver, and 7 total losses by 1 score is something to build on.

I'm not going to spend time looking up the actual numbers but doesn't it seem like the Chargers lose 5+ games by 1 score every single year, with a couple of those coming because of missed kicks? It's like how the Raiders always were top of the league in penalties each year regardless of the coach. Losing 1-score games seems to be something the Chargers just do.

The Jaguars have strong ownership?

A: Schefter is contractually obligated to say that about all owners

B: Khan is probably among the most wealthy owners in the league

On the other hand

Good luck with that.

Elway moving up to prez role and will hire a GM under him

I know this isn't generally the way NFL franchises operate but I think there's a chance the McCaskeys choose to go this way.

I assume you mean with an outside hire, not elevating Pace?

Baltimore is kind of like that now, but I think Ozzies title is like special advisor or something, which I assume will be the effect role of Elway.

Atlanta promoted their former GM to Pres, though I'm not sure if he's still involved in a lot of personnel stuff or it was a legit movement to the business side.

But yea, I think that's the extent of franchises organized in some manner like that currently. So it was all internal movements that led to some type of GM who has some higher football exec above them (not including cases where that guy is head coach too)

Teams are shifting away from giving QBs all the power?

Anyways as to the structure, at the very least the NFL complicates it somewhat by having specific hiring rules for both the top level exec and top level coach jobs (both as it relates to access and the diversity requirements re:Rooney rule). So from the perspective alone it's a lot different since the NFL mandates some level of designation of roles whereas other leagues are seemingly a lot more informal and dictated more by unwirtten rules and protocol.

Anyways, its usually a matter of playing with titles, but you occassionally see some writer/bloggers offseason plan where they hire a super experienced President and also one of the hottest up and coming names as a GM candidate to be their GM, which just seems like detached from reality. Like, fine, propose some structure that no other NFL team uses, but be realistic about what type of profile is filling that GM role.

I know this isn't how it works, but I'm going to be pretty pissed if Carolina only gets one 5-11 season out of Joe Brady before he gets taken away.

There are rumors that Jim Harbaugh is actively trying to generate interest from NFL teams, and his extension offer from Michigan has sat unsigned for a week. Apparently he may have been in LA yesterday to meet with the Chargers about the HC role. Im sure Michigan's AD lowballed him with the contract extension offer and thats why this is happening, but the longer this lingers the more it hurts UM.

Doug Pederson is out in Philly. Would be great if he goes to KC as OC.
Bienemy isn't going anywhere. Apparently bad in interviews and some off field concerns. Only teams that likely would want him are Atlanta and maybe LAChargers.
