Just extend him you horsefeathers

At this point I don't think it's unreasonable to guess that the "we'd love to extend Bryant but Boras" thing is a PR story to give the Cubs cover when they intend to trade him under any circumstances, because the real priority is getting below the LT.

Oh absolutely. If/when we trade him there’s definitely going to be leaks we made a final “fair”offer after trying to extend him multiple times and really wanted to keep him, etc but Boras and KB were greedy and unreasonable and they forced the hand to trade him.

i was just thinking how happy i'd be if we just kept bryant and then i realized that the ricketts have successfully made me content with doing nothing

Well PTR won't be happy until we get under the LT so there will be some moves made. Of course the moves will be looking for more Iowa Shuttle players or more candidates for our 26th man (although we seem to be pretty deep in the 26th man category).

Recent talks between the Cubs and Nationals regarding Kris Bryant have “gone nowhere,” reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (via Twitter). Negotiations seemed to hit an impasse a few weeks ago, when the Cubs reportedly insisted upon the inclusion of promising center fielder Víctor Robles in any Bryant deal.

Could the Nats, or any team for that matter - include their 2020 1st round pick? Is trading future drafts even possible?

No.

No.

That rule should change.

This is going to end with them doing actual nothing and trying to get under the LT in 2021 instead.

I think that's very plausible, but as someone posted a couple weeks ago, it isn't hard to get under LT if you deal Quintana.

Can't help but wonder if the Nationals are trying to set something up. Now, Asdrubal Cabrera and Starlin Castro additions can both be explained away as a team trying to make sure it has options in case it misses out on it's top options. Heck, if Starlin hits like he did the 2nd half of the year ...

Still, to load up on middle infielders when your top trade chip is Carter Kieboom? As interesting as Kieboom is, the Nationals would likely fork him over gladly to get a big deal done. They seem superbly high on Luis Garcia, who has hit AA already, and Cole Freeman could reasonably be in the upper levels late in the year if they just needed a depth guy.

I think the Cubs are dreaming on Robles, and I'd certainly be more open to a Kieboom deal provided the Nationals could find a better 2nd piece. At the end of the day, though, quality tops quantity in any KB deal, so I just don't see how it gets done unless a third party gets involved.

Oh they're definitely getting under the LT this season. If it's not Bryant, it'll be Quintana for only salary relief or attaching one of the few good, cheap players with Chatwood for only (partial) salary relief. This offseason is basically a nightmare.

I've been dreading a Bryant trade for a while, but I'm starting to accept it might be the best of a shitty situation to do that. Though finding the right team is hard. I think the Phillies might jump in, assuming the arbitrator does indeed make his ruling this offseason.

Not sure what article this is from but it’s interesting to see the perspective of other teams re: Bryant

Edit: found it, from a Kap article: https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/cubs/why-cubs-and-theo-epstein-havent-done-anything-offseason?amp&__twitter_impression=true

I wouldn’t be shocked if Kaplan’s “anonymous executive/former GM” “source” is just Kaplan making horsefeathers up but putting an “anonymous” source on it to sound more authoritative. The lines and quotes from his “source” are similar to his takes on KB being overrated and what not that he always has, also randomly has a Gleyber comment and some White Sox ball washing which are things he brings up a lot and knows ruffles feathers/drives debate.

Bryant 2015-2016: .384 wOBA

Bryant since 2016: .382 wOBA

Yeah he’s largely been the same player every year since then. I get being worried about the injuries but he isn’t really a different player now vs 2016. Maybe he’s lost a little speed.

2015-2016: .285/.378/.524 .385 wOBA, 143 wRC+, .240 ISO, 11% BB, 26% K

But his wRAA for last year was a lot closer to 2015 than 2016 or 2017.

It comes down to whether he will be a top 10 wOBA guy like 2016-2017 or “only” top 30 like in 2015 and 2019.

You can debate that on the offensive side, but his defense has certainly declined and the metrics bear that out.

Guess that would explain why the offensive numbers are pretty similar but he’s gone from a 7 win guy to a 5 win guy

Yeah that’s the one thing, idk if he’s as bad as he was last year though. He’s probably not -7 DRS bad at 3B, he still rated out pretty neutral in the OF. He probably is in a decline overall defensively and he’s probably never going to rate elite, maybe embracing some more shifting (Ross has hinted he’s gonna shift more, IIRC) could help at least get him back between -2 and +2 or so on the DRS spectrum at 3B and maintain being around 0 in the OF.

Also have to wonder how much the knee affected the poor defensive numbers. If he can stay healthy maybe they improve just because of that. Obviously it’s a red flag maybe he’s slowing athletically/health wise and there’s just gonna always be something physically that can hold him back but the knee last year could’ve caused the numbers to be worse than his true talent.
