I think we need a bat more than another pen arm at this point. Or at least need a more impactful bat than another impactful bullpen arm. Get Tony Watson for nothing and give up something(s) real for a bat that moves the needle.

Wonder if we could see a dramatic position player trade to shake things up

How many bags of balls are you expecting?

Seriously though. Let’s horsefeathering shake things up. We can not do something and remain the same good, sometimes very good but rarely great team. Or we can try to change the dynamic of the team, maybe it works and the team gets better or maybe it fails and we can kick of a Yankees style mini rebuild.

I dunno I’m gasping at straws, I just hate watching this team right now

Agreed. If we can see it, Theo sure as hell be able to see it. We need guys who aren’t gonna be happy just to be in the race. We need guys who are obsessed with winning.

The White Sox have been playing well. I had a feeling these games would be trouble.

Not that I’d have much confidence playing anyone right now.

Ivan Nova has been hot garbage. No excuse to score one run tonight with the start we got from Hamels.

Not sure why but I was hopeful Carlos Gonzalez would be another Jim Edmonds story with the Cubs.

Probably not gonna happen. Man has he gotten bad.

We have one reclamation project and we don’t play him.

no but for real, this has gotta be the low point in the epstein era

This is an incredibly dumb statement, even for you.

it is? when were you less optimistic about the future since he took over?

You're going to have to give me a few minutes. I'm going to need to go back and remember my thoughts on the future of the Cubs on each of the 2806 days that Epstein has been in charge.

Posted

I can give you a handful of days this year where people were more pessimistic. Go look up the game threads from March 31-April 5. The Cubs lost 6 straight games and allowed 8, 11, 8, 6, 9 and 13 runs. They blew five leads in the first three of those games, then got hammered in the last three (the third one was 13-10 but it was 13-5 going into the 8th).

I'm sure you were losing your horsefeathers back then, although that's not really much different than most other days over the past year or so for you.

When you say future do you mean like just the immediate season? 2-3+ years from now? There's still plenty of positives going on with this team, this year to be pretty optimistic about the season. Multiple years from now I'm not going to get overly caught up on that for now since so many things can change.

I thought that's what Carlos Gonzalez was all about. The only thing he shook up was his postal address.

What the horsefeathers happened to him anyway.

Dude was pretty much always a Coors fraud. Career .250 .306 .418 .724 road splits.

Ask DJ LaMahieu how much road splits as a Rockie matter post-Rockies career.

LeMahieu has a career .111 Iso, so probably not the best example to trot out there. Matt Holliday would be a more clear illustration that Coors splits aren't to be taken seriously, because there's a hangover effect that depresses road numbers that doesn't exist elsewhere(essentially, you get used to curve balls not biting and don't pick them up as well on road trips). Plus the NL West outside of Coors is several pitcher friendly spots on top of that for a disproportionate amount of the away games.

I mean, Bote can be our Lamahieu. The need for rangy athletes at 2B has diminished greatly. He has rated very well over there. We should also trade for and sign Howie Kendrick. 2B is less of a concern with the proper alignment.

We need a true, everyday CF, and probably another corner OF.

A lot of these needs would be lessened if our big bats could actually perform with RISP. The general belief is that a good hitter's line should carry over in potential scoring situations but with our team, they flat out do not. Most of these guys become relief pitchers in those situations. Its embarrassing.
