If it isn’t vintage Dave Winfield-era brown and banana yellow, I don’t want to see it.

I'm having a hard time articulating this well, but good for San Diego dropping cash, good for Machado getting paid, and boy do I still not believe in Machado as a star player going forward. The Padres can use all the help they can get so I don't want to make it a 'they'll rue the day' conversation, but there's still not one aspect of Machado's game I can look at and think 'ah yes, that's what he's elite at'.

hitting for power without being a 1B or corner OF?

LOL @ the White Sox.

(now watch Bryce go sign with them) :-"

Not very likely, but I could totally see them coming out of nowhere and giving Harper a massive (compared to the other teams) offer to sign with them. They keep downplaying the importance of signing one of those 2, but its possible they actually get a bit desperate with 1 off the board.

williams was talking about how they need more than one player and weren't willing to go up to $300M. i don't see that happening.

i have gone back and forth 20 times in the last 12 months on whether i think machado is great or not and then one day i realized that it didn't matter. the only thing that matters is i for sure did not want to be on the hook for $300 million for him (but like the piece of trash i am i would have talked myself into it if we signed him)

I guess, the IsoPs he tends to run are more borderline top 5 for a 3B. I admit a certain irrationality to my thoughts here too, but Machado feels like one of those guys who is capable of everything and has demonstrated it all in short bursts or in various years, but I don't think there's ever a version of him that is everything he could be(and is played up to be in a productivity sense). The best example of that is his defense taking a statistical nosedive when he filled out and actually started hitting for those power numbers.

He's averaging ~5 WAR a season through his career, and unlike Harper he's doing it it without a lot of variability. What more do you want from the guy? The game is frikkin' hard.

Agreed, it ain't happening. I think with Manny they'd have a real cornerstone for the rebuild.

Now it looks pretty meh. To which I say good! White Sox fans are garbage.

I don't think he's the other-worldly defender that he was early in his career and I don't think he's going to be a .370 wOBA guy consistently. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't clear 4 WAR more than once going forward, if at all. I also get the argument for Machado, I don't pretend I'm going to concretely convince everyone of my position.

Awesome...But to compare apples to apples, what is the Padres' commitment beyond 2022?

It's a hell of a lot higher than $8M, but that's a purposefully overstated difference.

If they perform as they are supposed to Bellinger, Seager and Buehler etc. will be making a ton of money by that time it's just not technically on the books yet.

Boy, it's cute to watch people pine for the freed up money their team will spend a fraction of.

It must be nice not to have any Heywardian albatrosses on the roster, to say nothing of the Darvish or Chatwood versions.

it would have sucked to have never gotten lester

the point is that ignoring big free agents isn't better than risking bad contracts if the majority of the savings aren't going back into the team. not having heyward wouldn't benefit us if it just meant that the payroll was 18 million less a year or whatever

Could be only 1 year of Machado if he and Hosmer opt out. Hosmer would have 3/39 left on the deal and would be going into his age 32 season so it’s not likely to actually happen.
