Johnny Field And Bryce are the same age and both grew up in Vegas and Field and Gallo went to HS together (KB, Bryce and Gallo all played little league together and are buddies). KB also follows Field on social media, so they must know each other. Bryce, unfortunately, only follows his family and sponsors it appears. Hmmmmmm :-k

We’re just getting as many of Bryce’s buddies in the org as possible

Just so long as Chris Gimenez isn't pals with Bryce.

Pat is already licking his chops at spending a whole half inning talking about this guy's name if he ever gets into a game.

Pat: Here comes Johnny Field making his Cubs debut. And Ronny, we've talked about players with names that describe their roles perfectly, well I cannot think of a better name for a defensive specialist than Johnny Field.

Ron: Yeah Partner, I would have to agree with you there.

Pat: Johnny takes strike one on the outside corner.

Ron: Of course, I can also think of a few guys who have names that are not great for their roles.

Pat: Here's the 0-1 - It's outside. You mean like former pitcher Bob Walk?

Ron: That's one of my favorites! Heh, if you are a pitcher the last thing you want is the name like Bob Walk

Pat: No, not at all. Field fouls it away, 1 and 2 now. Ron did you ever face Bob Walk?

Ron: You know, I don't believe that I did. But I did have an at bat against a Jamie Walker.

Pat: Did you walk?

Ron: *chuckles* I did not. I actually grounded into a double play

Pat: The 1-2 is up high, count now even. Perhaps he should have been named Jamie Grounder. (muffled laughter in the press box). Here's another one for you - how about former Tampa Bay Ray Grant Balfour?

I'd add Vasto, just because we don't have many teams he didn't clear. In all honesty, I kind of like Gore being around lol.

He’s kinda a waste of a 40-man spot until September. I’m guessing him or so other fast guy will be able to be had for nothing come August.

There’s some dumb horsefeathers in here, like thinking Whit Merrifield is a good leadoff option (he’s not, Heyward has a higher career OBP and Whit would project for like our 7th best OBP next year) and it also talks about not going after Harper/Machado. But there’s some interesting tidbits on Iglesias on being good against “power arms” (guys you face in the playoffs) and it might be enough to sway me to really be interested in him now as our prime backup MIF target since he plays really good defense and would give us a “super defense” option with him at SS and Javy at 2B at times.

The Cubs were .7 position player fwar off of the highest in baseball last year (ranked 4th). I'm not sure that side of the ball needs fixed. Adding Bryce makes you by far the best offense in baseball.

The point being, that it doesn't take an article to say it. Also that "fixing the offense" isn't why you're adding Bryce.

Also, any regression is covered by Bryant being something resembling Bryant.

The Cubs offense from mid Augustish-September “needs fixing” maybe it’s all just noise but something went wrong and maybe it’s not “fixing” but at least “tweaks” are needed. Harper helps regardless of what you think this offense is or isn’t and at the very least it appears we need a SS option addition and a backup C. And adding Harper mitigates the rebounds you need from other guys, he “fixes” things.

I'll be damned if anyone doesn't think all of that dongless garbage doesn't need to be fixed or tweaked or whatever the horsefeathers you want to call it. SMALL BALL IS FOR NERDS AND METHADONE FREAKS. Edited by Sammy Sofa

Again, absolutely add Bryce. Not because he “fixes” something. It’s not “broke.” That is of course no reason not to improve it from “already very good” to elite.

Well, no FU offseason apparently. This magnifies the Kintzler trade being even shittier than we originally thought if money of this low significance matters

Well, no FU offseason apparently

Eh, giving a 34 year old pitcher $20 million isn’t necessary for an FU offseason. I’m a Hamels fan but the best window for him on the Cubs was under the non-option years of that 2012 extension thanks to the [expletive] salary cap

If they’re having to jump through crazy hoops to bring back a 34 year old pitcher they apparently really want I’m worried about how much money they really have to spend.

That being said. There has to be some leverage with the Rangers here if they’re on the hook for the $6 million buyout. Tell them instead of just eating $6 million in cash they can take back a Kintzler and we’ll give them Zack Short and a pitching prospect or some horsefeathers for a PTBNL

Seriously. I can see Theo sitting in a shadowy booth in Arlington smoking a cigar and loudly musing, as soon as the Rangers' GM enters the lounge, "It would be a REAL shame if we didn't have the cap space to pick up Cole's option. hahahahaHAHAHAHA!!!!"

I'm curious how high folks expected the payroll to jump. Before adding anyone at all they had a full roster that was right at the luxury tax, and getting Harper adds probably 35 million to that on the low end. Hamels is either 14 or 20 million more, and that still hasn't done anything to address the pen unless you count sealing Montgomery away from the rotation. Yes, Kintzler and Duensing(and in a different way Chatwood) are frustrating contracts to deal with in that light, but ultimately the 2 relievers at a combined 8.5 million aren't going to be the difference between a prince and pauper offseason.

I expect a payroll up to ~$275 this offseason if Bryce is included and most of the other deals being 1 or 2 year deals that could help get us back under max penalties within 2 years and possibly a full re-set within 2 years.
