Some of you think Daniel Murphy is going to be a bench player?

I think he starts until Bryant returns (assuming Bryant is not actually dead).

Then, I think Bote starts ahead of him, unless or until Bote is found out to not be an actual god.

I don't think there will be many games with a righty on the mound and Bote starting with Murphy sitting.

I think about half assuming Bote keeps it up (quite an assumption, I know)

That's half-ish vs righties. and most all vs. lefties. (plus days Bryant rests, Bote moves back to 3B)

When Bryant returns, Bryant (as often as he's able), Heyward, Rizzo and Baez start everyday.

That means you have 3 spots for Schwarber, Almora, Happ, Zobrist, Bote, Russel and Murphy. I'd say Zobrist, Schwarber, and Bote are your 3 most days.

have you watched any cubs games since the walkoff grand slam? bote hasn’t played that much and has been terrible.

I would like to gently suggest that of those 7 players, that Bote is never any higher than the 5th best option. Against LHP Almora, healthy Russell, and probably both of Happ/Zobrist are better options, and against RHP Schwarber, Happ, Zobrist, and Murphy are better options. As resident La Stella stan I don't think he's far from Bote against RHP too.

Like I said, if he proves to not be an actual god by the time Bryant is back, this all changes. The league has made an adjustment. He has time to make an adjustment. Murphy is great insurance if he doesn't.

Also, I forgot Russell existed in my previous post.

He's already down to 750 OPS against RHP for the season and pretty weak overall in the second half while Murphy is 830 vs RHP and scorching hot in the second half. I don't think they'll be riding the Bote train over Murphy much at all. That's kind of why they got him.

I think they got him because it is questionable what they'll get from Bryant the rest of the year. He fills the gap until Bryant is as close to 100% as he'll get. Then he's insurance on Bote as well.

If everything goes right, I don't think he (Murphy) starts much. I think I've given sufficient caveats as to the many things that could go "not right".

I really think you're overestimating how much Bote is going to play. He's been a part time starter ever since he's been up, and that's been with KB hurt & without Murphy. Now, you acquire one of the hottest hitters in the league (post ASB). I would guess the plan is for Murphy to be the everyday 2B, play 7 innings, get a lead, and then be subbed out for Russell while Javy is moved from SS over to 2B when the team is at full strength (if KB is ever alive again).

I think they got him because they've had a replacement level player playing at SS over the last couple of months. Plus, the offense as a whole, obviously, hasn't been great either since the break.

Bull,

Did you choose your eye color or your height? is your seasonal allergies a lifestyle issue? Are you left-handed and therefore prone to evil?

he's a little over enthusiastic about David Bote's playing time, but I'm not sure this response is necessary

No. Trade 1 or 2 of Addy, Almora, and Happ for as good of a starting pitcher as you can get. Bote stays and gives us solid production and depth as a 9th or 10th guy.

Don’t act like you know me. I simply think what he said was very different than what Hader said. I’ve had some great civilized dialogue with several here via private message, but have refused to derail this thread. Please respect that.

Edit: although given the thread title, I suppose it was destined to be somewhat other than completely baseball related. I am trying to honor Tim’s admonishment though.

Edit edit: HR Bote!

This trade is very disappointing to me. The Cubs continue to acquire players with shitty character while preaching how much character means to them. I really can't bring myself to accept this trade. Aroldis Chapman has much worse character, but that seemed like a one-time thing to help us finally win a World Series. Or so I told myself to rationalize the move. Completely disregarding homophobia to acquire an old piece of horsefeathers with a broken-down body says a lot though.

It's impossible to act like there aren't a bunch of shitty people across the league. We'll always have to look past the actions and views of those we watch for entertainment. But the Cubs didn't have to trade for a known piece of horsefeathers.

This sucks.

Cubs vet past anti-gay comments before trading for Daniel Murphy

General manager Jed Hoyer said the Cubs were sensitive to anti-gay comments Daniel Murphy made to media three seasons ago and reached out to Major League Baseball’s ambassador for inclusion, Billy Bean, before completing Tuesday’s trade for the second baseman.

“We wanted to get his impression on it,” Hoyer said. “He was really positive and thought the organization could really benefit from his presence. We felt it was important to make that phone call.”

Through all the attention, Murphy and Bean eventually developed a friendship.

I hope Murphy doesn’t ever hit a walk off homer. The team is gonna want to mob him at home plate and he’s not gonna want to be touched.

What a dolt.

Holmes for thinking he's talking about the A's President?

I remember hearing an interview with him on local sports radio a while back - I don't think I missed the intro but I guess I must have - and thinking when did Beane leave the A's and how was none of this in the movie - until they summed up after a break 15 minutes in.
