The official announcement won’t come until Wednesday night, but the Cubs have drawn starring roles next week for what might the most powerful event of All-Star week in Washington next week.

Second baseman Javy Baez and left fielder Kyle Schwarber, who entered Tuesday night’s game tied for the Cubs’ lead with 17 homers each, make up half the National League field for Monday’s Home Run Derby, according to several team insiders.

Think of all the opposite field singles they will hit!

When did they start inviting Non All-Stars to be in the HR Derby? Are they really that desperate to find guys who want to do it?

I think they started doing it in the last 2-3 years

Yeah I want to say the change happened because the HR leader at the time didn’t make the ASG, somehow,so they changed it to let him in. Maybe I’m not remembering correctly though.

If I'm not mistaken, they let the captain of the HR derby teams select the roster, regardless if they are in the ASG or not. It's how Stanton and Cespedes won without being in the ASG.

I believe it's this as well. Might have been Ryan Howard when he had declined enough to no longer be a star but not so much that he wasn't still a prodigious dongsman.

Apparently they moved to a timed round format rather than the "until 10 outs" format. I don't know when that happened since I haven't watched the derby in a few years, but that sounds like an excellent change.

That was definitely the format when Bryzzo were in the Derby two years ago. I think it was a year or two old at that point.

Cespedes was the one I was trying to remember. He went and won the Derby handily that year, too, I believe.

Looks like the format change started in 2015.

Yeah, I don't follow the HR Derby that closely, but this was a good change. It still gets old and stale, but it's exciting when a player from your favorite team is competing in it.

Same thing with the 3-PT Shooting Contest in the NBA.

So there is a chance the final round in the Home Run Derby is all Cubs with Baez & Schwarber on opposite sides of the bracket.

Pretty awesome. Definitely want Baez to destroy that Muncy guy.
