Not very often you see both managers out arguing on one play.

And why is Hurdle so mad now? He didn’t seem to say anything before they reviewed it and he didn’t ask for a review. So he didn’t appear to care at all until they reviewed the play and upheld it.

Maybe they didn't show it on the Cubs feed, but on the Pirates feed it was clear Hurdle came out to argue right away.

How so?

sliding into someone's plant leg when they aren't looking is pretty dirty

Not his plant leg

ok well whatever you want to call his other leg it was still dirty

I never thought it should be overturned based on the technicality of the rules, but come on; anyone who sits here and acts like that was totally clean is full of it.

They got away with it because it was within the latter of the law, but we'd be horsefeathering furious if that happened to the Cubs.

I would guess that he got the opportunity to see a bunch of replays and get riled up about it.

What I can’t figure out is what Maddon was vigorously chatting with the other ump about after the call went in his favor.

Agreed; that was clearly intentional by Rizzo (probably to mess up the throw)

I think he’s upset they reviewed it to begin with and/or Hurdle never challenged it and the umps did it on their own.

Rizzo is definitely gonna get HBP next time up.

If it wakes this team up and he doesn’t get hurt. Who cares. I thought it was a good baseball play. The catcher needs to get out of the way to make the throw on a double play.

I didn’t say it was clean, only that he didn’t hit the guy’s plant leg(which would have been even more dangerous). My immediate thought is that Rizzo definitely didn’t need to slide that way to make contact(even if he technically was within the rules, which I’m not sure he was even after review), and also that Diaz has responsibility for clearing the runner since Rizzo didn’t exactly need to fully extend his arm to still reach the plate.

My gut says that play was dirty.

That being said, I think JD is right. That's a double play, and so Rizzo's slide should be treated the same way as a slide into 2b on a double play. In that sense, it's on Elias for being oblivious.

I’d hope Joe was arguing about potential warnings being issued immediately after some one wears one in the ninth
