Farrell, Tseng and Zastryzny were all treated as innings eating long men or spot starters of some sort. You’re right that Mazzoni isn’t a long man but the way he was sent right back down shows he was only there as a bridge to the bullpen day replacing a Darvish, so I wouldn’t hold that against Maples either.

Not great reasons but already being on the 40-man and Maples does have a decided K/9 and K% advantage over Hancock.
