A small linebacker. This guy better be ridiculously good to justify the pick.

Same height as Ray Lewis and only 10 pounds lighter on draft day.

Willis, Bowman, Lavonte David, Freeman, Shazier, Briggs to name a few that are very similar size wise to Smith. Not sure why people crap on "small" LB

briggs was in the 240s, this guy played in 220s, they aren't in same ballpark.

yeah and he went at the end of the 1st. This is 8th overall. He's got to be insanely good as a LB to justify this value. Very hard for a LB to have that kind of value, especially a small guy.

Because teams underestimated him because of his size. How many teams that passed on him would like a do over?

Briggs weighed 242 and Smith 236 at combine. I know it's different than when they played in college, but I'll be shocked if Smith weigh less than 235 in the NFL. Smith ran a 4.5 at 236 so he can still keep that weight and be that sideline to sideline LB.

Yep. Looking at Smith’s combine stats and he was exactly the same size as Ray Lewis. The ten pounds lighter remark was based off what I saw as his playing weight at Georgia.

If Smith turns out to be a HOF like lewis ill forgive the #8 pick issue

Like I said, he has to be ridiculously good to justify the pick. Didn't say he can't be, but it's an uphill battle for a LB, especially a guy that isn't a freak.

I’m sure Ryan Pace is waiting for your forgiveness on pins & needles.

Every player picked in the top 10 needs to be ridiculously good to justify the pick.

Just looked at some FA that are still out there, in case we don't fill a hold or 2. Obviously, the pickings are slim, but not barren....

WR- Dez Bryant, Eric Decker, Dontrelle Inman

OG- Jahri Evans

DE/OLB- Dee Ford, Junior Galette, Willie Young

CB- Bashaud Breeland (can't pass physical for a few months)

Not much, but some guys that you could conceivably get a solid year from. Anyway, we probably won't be filling all of our remaining needs, a guy or two here could help.

Trade down or not, I like the slate of guys who will be available in the second round for the Bears.

Some possibilities...

Will Hernandez

Josh Jackson

Harold Landry

Isaiah Oliver

Courtland Sutton

All would make sense for need and/or value. Bears are up 7- if those 5 were all gone, I'd be okay with a trade down for sure.

Kirk is still there too. I wonder if Pace will trade 1 of the 4th along with the 2nd to move up like 3-4 spots to make sure he gets his guy. Not a bad idea really.

No, different positions have different impacts on the game. A non pass rushing LB doesn't have that great of an impact, outside the elitiest. You can be a quality player at a number of positions and impact the game quite a bit, while at others you need the be insanely good to have a real impact. The most extreme are FBs, but centers, TE, and LB can also fit here.

Robert Mays of the Ringer has talked about how coverage linebackers who are fast are becoming more valuable with the way offenses are changing (RPOs, more emphasis on slot guys. RB passes, etc.). It still probably doesnt make ILB a priority position, but maybe it is not as low on the positional spectrum as it used to be.

I think the Bears are sitting pretty for round 2. I'd be ecstatic with Landry, Hernandez, or Sutton, and still pretty happy with the other guys Wrigley22 mentioned. I hope Pace doesn't trade down, or at least not more rhan a handful of spots.

They expect him to be insanely good if they picked him at #8. I'm also guessing that Fangio understands the value of inside linebackers in his defense.

The Fangio aspect is definitely a big positive, if anybody can make the most of Smith it's Vic.

With WR/OL/DB/EDGE all a need right here, I get the trade down motivation but I think I'd rather they get one of the guys at the top of this round.
