I'm trying to figure out which acquisition would be worse, Stanton or Ozuna. With Stanton they would have been hamstrung financially and we could continue to mock their annual compensation pick. In addition, Stanton is always an injury concern and a year older. Ozuna had a monster year last year and will certainly cost more in prospects, but will be dramatically less expensive, giving the Cardinals more payroll flexibility with potentially a similar value player.

Nah I like the idea the Cardinals feeling desperate and dealing a bunch of solid prospects for a good but not elite outfielder. After giving poor Dex $90 million last year.

i don't like the idea of the cardinals getting very good players who make little money, but maybe i'm nuts.

Would it make you feel better if they celebrated getting Ozuna and we got Yelich hours later? (the answer is obviously yes and there's no rumors about this but a guy can dream)

If the acquisition cost is as high as been reported I'm fine with them getting Ozuna who is a solid but not great player. They've proven they can't get the elite guys to come in FA and their only way to get them is either through development (they don't have any KB's, Lindor's, Correa's, etc that I know of coming) and thinning out their upper end prospects makes it harder to trade for impact guys. Ozuna, imo, is closer to the .260/.320/.450 and low-mid 20 HR guy to me than anything he was last year, which is a very solid player but not top tier and also he won't have a Stanton batting around him in that lineup that likely led to him getting better pitches, they are getting him to be their middle of lineup anchor.

Obviously I prefer them to keep running out the Grichuck's, Piscotty's, create a player they always find of the world in the OF corners this year but they were going to add a Ozuna level or better bat so I'm fine with this. Also they apparently want to move Fowler to RF, which makes no sense with his noodle arm.

I think this is good news generally. The Cards were always going to make a big move this winter, and in my opinion Ozuna is the least scary of the names they've been linked to. They took a big bite out of their depth to be 5 games back of us rather than 7.

The obvious downside is if they're not done. If they were to say "horsefeathers it" they could go grab Manny Machado and Wade Davis, and at that point I'm not entirely sure we're still better than them.

If they traded a bunch of good prospects for one-year of Machado and signed Davis to a 4-year contract, I'd be okay with that. They'd be a much better team for one year (and definitely give the Cubs a run for their money for the NL Central) while giving up many of their best prospects and potentially hamstringing their payroll a bit by paying big for a closer.

IMO, the Cubs would still be the envy of the division (with Milwaukee gaining) because their line-up is so young they are likely to get better over the next 2-3 years offensively without "improving" the roster with outside acquisitions.

Cards fans are going to be disappointed when Pham is merely ordinary this year. I also hear him get called a young player all the time, but he'll play the entire season at 30 years old.

Milwaukee is still trash and they'll prove it by winning 77ish games this year.

Why is it that when a 29-year-old has a career year for the Cardinals, people assume he'll continue to produce at that pace? Just the year before, Pham hit .226/.324/.440, but now, at the age of 30, he'll be a member of the best outfield in baseball. Whatevs...

Maybe. Maybe not if they acquire Archer or Cole or someone like that. Regardless of their win total in 2018, they're still young and improving.

Lol, Pham is going to go the way the rest of their one year pixie dust guys go. He also may not be able to see come the start of the season with that eye degeneration thing.

They really aren't that young outside of Arcia, Hader and Philips/Brinson (and they don’t have a KB or Rizzo on the roster or in the minors coming). All the guys that carried them last year were older and had career years (Anderson, Davies, Shaw, Nelson who is already hurt and out for a good chunk of the year, Santana, Thames, Sogard, Braun is a year older, etc) most are big regression candidates for me personally.
