I don't understand why all 3 having NTC is such a big deal. What indicator is there that Shark or Melancon would turn down a trade to Chicago? Heyward is a legitimate question, but Brett in particular has been talking up 3 NTC as this inhuman obstacle. Yes it's another thing to consider, but the odds of one of the SF guys killing a deal are low.

It's not necessarily them killing it because they don't want to go to the new club. It's them requiring some enhancement to waive the NTC and that enhancement being something that one of the clubs cannot abide, thus killing the trade.

Coming off the seasons they had, they know they don't have much leverage. They're the ones going to a more attractive situation, and for Samardzija it's a homecoming too.

Yeah, the only NTC that concerns me is Heyward's. I'm pretty sure Samardzija almost signed with us a couple years ago before deciding to sign with the Giants so I definitely think he'd approve a trade to Chicago.

Heyward is the problem in any trade scenario we come up with. I don't know if Theo and Jed have even discussed possible trade destinations with Heyward and his agent.

I'd have to think that we'd have to add prospects.

Who do you guys think would be in play? Having 0 "top 100" guys, I would think it would be tough to declare anybody as untouchable, even though I doubt it would be somebody like Adbert or Caratini.

Alzolay is going to be on some top 100's this off season. Law and Longenhagen's for sure. As for who I'd say is the CLOSEST to untouchable? My guess is Albertos. He's too far away to hold true value and he could conceivably jump into the top 50 or so, with half a dozen dominant outings next year. He's the highest upside guy we've got.

I really don't think Heyward is getting traded this offseason. No team is clamoring to trade for him, and the Marlins have better OF options available. I think what this really boils down to is if the Cubs are serious about pursuing B. Harper next offseason, and whether they sign him or not.

I know there is always the possibility Heyward rebounds and has a good year both in the field and at the plate, but I feel like that is a very remote possibility right now.

If we sign B. Harper next offseason -- Heyward is gone.

I remember around the deadline Samardzila saying that he liked SF and that they expected to be right back in the mix of things and how they all wanted to stay there and so forth. Could just be talk but he does seem to not mind staying put.

Would you support a J. Zimmerman for Heyward trade?

It depends on money. I don't think there's any way Detroit does that unless we're eating future money on Heyward.

I mean, if it's a straight contract swap, I'd take it, but it seems highly unlikely Tigers would do that, to say the least. They'd at least wait to see if Zimmerman could bounce back somewhat and increase his trade value. Zimmerman's on the downswing, but the change in pitching style might have some impact on his productivity (he's really dropped his FB usage by a lot), and it's possible to see him squeeze out some decent years before it's all said and done.

I keep thinking there's some sort of trade involving the Orioles/Red Sox/Tigers/Cubs that might make sense in terms of bad contract swaps (Chris Davis and Jason Heyward have close enough contracts (Davis does have deferred money) money/length wise ... Red Sox could use a 1st/DH power addition, and obviously, with the Tigers, dumping Jordan Zimmerman) but too many teams makes it tough to work out even a hypothetical that makes some sense for all the clubs.

If you're convinced that Zimmermann can bounce back and be simply a decent approximation of what 2017 Lackey was expected to be, and if Detroit picks up significant cash in the first 3 years(with the Cubs picking up significant cash in the last 3 years), then I can see that making sense. I don't see much purpose in swapping the contracts without up front relief, because I don't think 2021 payroll is a concern worth making that type of short run downgrade.

Out of curiosity, how much would you want the Tigers to pick up (assuming Heyward waived NTC and this was being discussed)? Heyward is what, 21.5/20/21 over 2018-2020. Zimmerman is 24/25/25. If you are simply talking balancing it out (say 3.5/5/4) over the next three years, okay, but it sounds like you are suggesting more than that.

Something like 10 million per for those 3 years. The two contracts are nearly identical AAV for luxury tax purposes(22M for Zimmermann, 23 for Heyward), and I'm far more optimistic Heyward turns it around than Zimmermann, so getting salary relief that would represent a quality player in the short run is what it would take for me.
