if there was some way to trick the giants into giving us samardzija for heyward i would be more excited than i was when we signed heyward in teh first place

Yeah I'd really like this deal, especially if it happens fast here (wouldn't have to trade any other position players for a SP, imo), could wait out Otani and if you miss him could still add Cobb, Chacin, Hellickson, Chatwood, etc. to fill out the rotation then add some combo of McGee, Nicasio, Reed, Oh, etc to fill out the bullpen and maybe even look at a Seth Smith or Cargo on a 1 year deal to take Heyward's spot.

If the giants do that, is jump for joy. Melancon looks like he can still be a solid late inning arm, and I'm fine with shark with only three years left. His peripherals were solid last year.

That would be a home run of a deal ... Shark and Melancon for heyward? Two decent to good options to fill needs while dumping a bad contract?

FWIW, I think it's been posted but not sure, Heyward is owed ~$127 million through 2023 (assuming no opt outs), Samardzija $54 through 2020 and Melancon $46.5 through 2020. I'd guess we'd get a little cash the next 1-3 years and then we'd be throwing in cash after 2020 (assuming Heyward doesn't opt out).

Not sure why the Giants would do that.

Yeah unless we are eating all of Samardzija's and Melancon's contracts and throwing in money for Heyward on top of giving up some prospects (Alozay, Maples, Caritini, etc.) it doesn't make a ton of sense. They should just go sign Cain, Gomez, etc or trade for Stanton to fill the OF. Maybe Cueto opting in really fucked up their plans/budget?

And not real sure why Heyward would want to do waive his NTC for that...unless maybe weather is a big deal for him.

This is probably the best way to make a Heyward deal this winter. Shark and Melancon's combined contracts are likely in the red by about as much as Heywards over the next three years. So I imagine moneywise, we wouldn't need to throw anything in until years 4-6, by which time we'll be in our tv deal and better able to absorb that dead money.

Even with how bad their outfield is, the Giants are definitely losing out on the talent portion of the deal.

So this probably only makes sense if they need to clear money for Stanton or JD Martinez, right? Maybe we take on Span's $ too, to fill our Jon Jay role?

Given the sheer number of night games, the weather in AT&T would suck for most of the season anyway.

Probably need to put out the David Bat Signal on this but let’s hope his wife/fiancé (he’s married or engaged, right?) is from California and she would want to move closer to home. If we are looking for reasons he’d waive his NTC.

Heyward was committed to UCLA coming out of HS in the Atlanta area.

Yeah, I seriously doubt the Giants would want to do that deal. You'd have to expand it and the Cubs would have to throw in some cash and maybe some decent prospects.

If they worked out all the details and money issues, Heyward could still just veto the trade. I don't think Heyward is that unhappy being here and Cubs fans hardly give him any grief because he helped win a WS his first year here + Game 7 inspirational speech.

FWIW, Dan Bernstein just said he’s heard the same thing that Rogers tweeted. He’s going to too more about it in a few minutes.

If the Cubs ate the entire Heyward contract plus take Shark and Melancon off their hands then the money saved is a huge win for the Giants and their pursuit of Stanton. Heyward’s bad but you’re not giving up prospects while also eating the money in the deal and if you do it’s not going to be anyone like Alzolay. That’s just asinine. His defense alone makes him league average and getting that for free is insane value.

Their outfield is so screwed, I would assume they’d still be in on Cain even after trading for Heyward.

Yep. Remember when sori would've nixed a deal to the Giants because it'd be too cold?

Cueto opting in had to hurt them. They're pushing the LT right now. They've pieced together contenders enough that they're not about to rebuild. They've got a pair of elite guys and they'll fill in around them and expect some bounce back years and devil magic to propel them.

The biggest thing this kind of trade does for them is open up some payroll. Sharks peripherals were good. Not sure how sabermetrically inclined their FO is(don't think much though), but they may think they can replace a 4.50ish ERA fairly easy. And they can find ways around Melancon too.

Heyward is elite defensively and that matters quite a bit in that park. I can see them thinking he'd help them.

That said, I do think the values here are still quite a bit off. But, with the Giants trying to compete, I could see us throwing in 8-10 mill a year for the rest of the deal, AFTER this upcoming season.

That'd help the Giants out quite a bit payroll-wise and make the deal fairly even from a value standpoint.

I remember it well -- I was living in SF at the time and was in a particularly bad mood about the shitty summer evening weather.

This is a dumb question, I should know, but free agency/trading is completely open right now. Right? A trade or signing could happen like right now if a team/player wanted to?

Yes.

I saw a tweet on Melancon earlier, he’s like 3rd in MLB since the early 2010s for RP in BB/9 and 2nd next to Andrew Miller in K/BB ratios. So he certainly fits the “strike thrower” bullpen arm Theo alluded to.
