Yes. See what sticks and try to find the next Brandon Morrow this way.

I mean every team does this to an extent and at least Morrow showed some ace flashes in MLB. Still has one of the highest single game scores in history. I feel like there's an error when I look at Hultzen's page and he hasn't even thrown 200 professional innings.

Webster was also a rumored target from the Garza era. It's kinda amusing how many of those guys we still ended up with anyway and it was because their arms fell off and they were rehabbing (Webster, Hultzen, Casey Kelly, Jacob Turner).

Cards sign Dejong to a 6yr $26mil deal.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/birdland/sources-cardinals-dejong-finalizing-contract-extension/article_eeb31456-cc17-58be-b959-79aca1340f0f.html

It's one of the largest ever for a player with less than a full year of service time. The deal also includes two option years and a total possible value of $51.5 million, confirmed a source. The options are both club options and they are worth $12.5 million for 2023 and $15 million for 2024.

The complete deal would cover two of his free-agent years.

The Royals offered Neil Walker a minor league deal and he turned it down. Kinda crazy he can’t even get a major league deal. He could/should be a starting second baseman, third baseman or first baseman for a major league team.

I know they have LT concerns but he’d be a perfect guy for the Yankees, Imo. They could let the young IFs take more time in the minors or a protected/bench role if needed, he’d provide a good OBP boost from leadoff or 8/9 in the order before Stanton/Judge, and adds depth in event of Bird, Didi, Torres, Andujar injury or regression/sucakge

I don't hate him for Cleveland either.

Not sure he can work as a starter in Cleveland with Kipnis and Ramirez around.

Royals sign Jon Jay

I'm a big Almora fan, but I would have loved for the Cubs to sign him at that price.

I wish we would’ve got Dyson

That offer for Walker seems unnecessarily greedy by the Royals.

Whit Merrifield was a nice boost to my fantasy team, but you can't find a spot for him and Walker when you're likely running out Jon Jay, Soler, Alex Gordon's corpse, and something called Jorge Bonifacio in your OF/DH positions?

So it's probably looking like Cubs won't get a pick from Arrieta when he signs? He has sign for 50+ mil in order for the Cubs to get the pick right? I'm not sure he's going to hit that.

That’s a rule? I just thought the only way we don’t get a pick is if he signs after the draft?

I found it.

Under the new rules, if the team that loses the free agent is a revenue-sharing recipient, based on its revenues and market size, then the selection -- if and only if the lost player signs for at least $50 million -- will be awarded a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A of the 2018 MLB Draft. If the player signs for less than $50 million, the compensation pick for those teams would come after Competitive Balance Round B, which follows the second round.

If the team that loses the player does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, its compensatory pick will come after Competitive Balance Round B. The value of the player's contract doesn't matter in this case. The nine clubs that fall into this category are the Angels, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Cubs, Mets, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox and White Sox.

So it doesn't matter for the Cubs just as long as Arrieta signs somewhere. I was thinking of the first paragraph, but the Cubs isn't in that group.

What's the rule with when teams can make a QO? I heard somebody say Moustakous can't be QOd next year, is that because KC already did last year? Or because he didn't sign for enough money? Or a 1 year deal? Or because of the mutual option? Or the person's an idiot who doesn't know what they're talking about?

I know somebody traded for can't be QOd, but what if somebody signs on the 3rd day of the season, do they avoid the QO that way?

EDIT: I was wrong that you can't do it back to back years. It's if you never had it before in your career.

Which players are eligible for the qualifying offer?

Only those who …

A. Have never received a qualifying offer previously in their career (this is a new wrinkle in the CBA), and

B. Have spent the entire season on that team's roster (so in-season acquisitions are ineligible)

You can't do it back to back seasons with the same player.

I thought I'd read that a player can only get offered a QO once in their career now.

I do think the option thing also can be a reason you can’t do a QO. If a team doesn’t pick up their side of an option I think they can’t QO you.

Well, that's good news. I thought Arrieta had to sign a contract worth more than $50 million to get a pick after the Competitive round B (after the 2nd round). We also got a pick for losing W. Davis, and it's a pretty deep and talented draft class.

Freaking sign already Jake. You're not getting that huge payday. It's not happening.
