it is really too bad that all the extremely confident people in this thread haven't been able to watch any of the games so far.

the cubs can certainly win tonight, but they've been pretty handily outplayed in this series. strasburg and scherzer are nice, but they haven't pitched every inning. 8 runs in four games is terrible, plus we've made a million errors and edwards has set the game on fire twice.

the nats just have a much larger margin for error tonight. they're going to run out gio and scherzer and hope they can connect to doolittle in the eighth. if not, roark could throw an inning or two in there, too. lots of flexibility. something like gio for four, scherzer for three, doolittle for two is the ideal, but you could move all of these around quite a bit.

the cubs are desperately hoping no one besides hendricks, quintana, and davis pitch tonight. everyone loves starters out of the bullpen, but quintana just does not feel like a guy whose stuff will play up in this spot to me. he's going to get his shot, though, especially since joe will refuse to ride hendricks no matter how he looks. we've seen this show before. it wouldn't surprise me if we ended up trying to also squeeze out a matchup inning against the middle of the lineup at some point, just going with a new pitcher for each guy.

i am skeptical of our chances to win this game if it is low-scoring and all on the pitchers being near-perfect again. we will need to dong, and hard.

it doesn't make any sense to be extremely confident or extremely doubtful either way. it's one baseball game (and one best of 5 series) between two very well matched and very good teams. i don't get why we try to analyze it so hard other than i guess to expend nervous energy. Edited by David

The Cubs won the World Series.

People forget that.

cleveland has blown 2 game leads in consecutive playoff series. people forget that too.

I bet Indians fans haven't forgotten that although I'm sure they wish they could.

If Joe uses Q out of the bullpen tonight and we win, who starts Game 1 of the NLCS? Lackey?

when is game 1? i haven't allowed myself to think that far ahead.

Hey, it would be a welcome horsefeathering change of pace from Joe's, "well, let's give each guy at least 3-4 chances to REALLY horsefeathers it up"-approach.

Lester because yesterday was his "side day?"

Or Lackey...not sure what else you do unless Hendricks just mows them down and never gives Joe a chance to use Q.

Let's see how cocky you motherlubbers are if I go in on this ticket being offered to me for tonight's game.

WHERE'S YOUR TOSSED SALAD AND SCRAMBLED EGGS NOW.

Perma ban if you go and the Cubs lose.

I'm not as skeptical as you, but I agree. This overconfidence is crazy.

It's 1 game. How can anyone be so damn confident? Our offense hasn't hit anyone this series. Not just Strasburg or Scherzer.

One thing I'm happy about based on yesterday. No more Madmen gifs. Good riddance.

Its baseball and we have the better pitcher on the mound at full rest. Advantage is ours. This team that has outplayed us so thoroughly was a game 2 8th inning rally away from being swept. Meh, we'll be fine. Cubs win 7-2, 5 Cubs runs in the first 2 innings.

Regarding the offense, it's too bad you didn't watch the playoffs last year. Yes there are a couple different guys and its a different season, but the majority of the offense will be made up of guys who played on a team that got shut out 4 times in 13 LCS/WS games, including twice in a row in the NLCS, and 2 of the first 3 games of the World Series. What did the Cubs do after getting shut out 2 times in a row against the Dodgers? They scored 24 runs in the next 3 games including 5 off of Kershaw to win the series. What did they do after getting shut out in games 1 and 3 of the World series? ...Well they struggled for 2 more games and then broke out for 9 and 8 runs in the last 2 games to win the title. The Cubs are streaky but when they get out of slumps they get out of them in a hurry.

I'm not saying the Cubs are a lock to win or anything but I expect the Cubs to come through until they don't. I have full faith in Kyle, and Gio honestly does not scare me at all. Sure having Scherzer in the middle innings scares me but so did Andrew Miller in Game 7 and we scored 2 off of him.

No, they need him to come in after Lackey implodes in the 3rd.

The way Joe managed game 7 last year, he makes me nervous. But I’m going to stay optimistic because faith is going to be the X factor tonight.

If you honestly think anyone is truly overconfident that we will win a crapshoot winner take all Game 5, you are just wrong. You can be optimistic or pessimistic, you can display confidence or doubt. I choose to be confident.
