I don't think there are any comparisons. If I remember what I studied about that season, the Cubs had been good from the beginning of the season into the first couple days of September, then went into a long losing streak.

If the Cubs don't win the division, I don't think people are going to think of this as some great collapse, but rather a team that severely underachieved.

But people probably have more knowledge of this and perhaps can tell me I'm way off.

Jesus Christ. I've got a raging doom boner going right now, but come on; of course it's nothing like "the collapse of 'XX" the horsefeathering SEASON AFTER THEY FINALLY WON THE WS.

Didn't the '69 Cubs blow like a 12-game lead and finish 10 games back? So far, this team performed below expectations for most of the season and then were swept in one series on a weekend in early September. There's been no collapse yet. We're still in first. And there isn't much of a collapse to have when you've never been up more than 5 games all year.

I don't know blowing a 5 game lead with 22 left qualifies as some degree of a collapse.

But we haven't blown anything yet. We've lost some games off our lead.

Even an irrational meatball such as myself realizes this was our first series loss in a few weeks... unfortunate that it had to be a sweep. This slide would have to last another 1.5-2 weeks to be considered a collapse, and the 2nd half Cubs have inspired enough confidence to believe that's not going to happen.

Yes I realize this is an offbeat post from me.

Man, if it's 1969 all over again, forget this baseball thing and let's go catch Led Zeppelin at the arena. I hear James Gang is opening for them.

Nah, it's the Bartman Group.

2004 is a much better comparison.
