Cool olive branch (not even sure if that's the right word here) from the Cubs and I'm relieved for him and hopefully his life is made less weird by this.

Statement from Bartman

“Although I do not consider myself worthy of such an honor, I am deeply moved and sincerely grateful to receive an official Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series Championship ring. I am fully aware of the historical significance and appreciate the symbolism the ring represents on multiple levels. My family and I will cherish it for generations. Most meaningful is the genuine outreach from the Ricketts family, on behalf of the Cubs organization and fans, signifying to me that I am welcomed back into the Cubs family and have their support going forward. I am relieved and hopeful that the saga of the 2003 foul ball incident surrounding my family and me is finally over.

I humbly receive the ring not only as a symbol of one of the most historic achievements in sports, but as an important reminder for how we should treat each other in today’s society. My hope is that we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating, and to challenge the media and opportunistic profiteers to conduct business ethically by respecting personal privacy rights and not exploit any individual to advance their own self-interest or economic gain.

Moreover, I am hopeful this ring gesture will be the start of an important healing and reconciliation process for all involved. To that end, I request the media please respect my privacy, and the privacy of my family. I will not participate in interviews or further public statements at this time.

Words alone cannot express my heartfelt thanks to the Ricketts family, Crane Kenney, Theo Epstein, and the entire

Cubs organization for this extraordinary gift, and for providing the City of Chicago and Cubs fans everywhere an

unforgettable World Championship in 2016. I am happy to be reunited with the Cubs family and positively moving

forward with my life.”

this is so horsefeathering weird.

it definitely is, but his life was impacted in such a negative way...at least he gets something awesome out of it in the end.

i wonder if he has made his way unnoticed to a cubs game at some point in the last 14 years (i'm thinking probably not)

and if not, if he will now

Yeah; it's the weird resolution (hopefully) to a weird situation that the poor guy got WAY too much horsefeathers over. Still plenty of meatballs that look at him as some kind of villain or figure of scorn, and since he very understandably doesn't want to be a part of something like throwing out a first pitch, this seems like a good way to publicly give a little something back to a guy who didn't deserve any of the awfulness he's gone through.

If he went dressed up in any outfit but the one he wore to the playoff game there is no way anybody would recognize him. Throw a bryant shersey on him with khaki shorts and he's 75% of the fan base.

that's what i figure

but he also seems really introverted (for what little we know about him - which is essentially 14 years of complete silence publicly) and i could see him wanting to distance himself from ground zero entirely.

Eh, its a nice gesture overall. I always thought it was weird (but understandable) that he went completely off the grid after the incident, and that elusiveness contributed to the ongoing Bartman discussion over the years. If he had just went on a radio show, maybe did 1-2 interviews between 2003 and now, he would have been mostly forgotten by now. But getting a statement out of Bartman has been so difficult, everyone who doesn't follow the Cubs as closely as we do cast him as someone in hiding and his life ruined by what happened. From all accounts he's just some normal dude working some normal job, not a recluse.

Maybe I'm way off the mark here, I dunno. Either way, good for him.

Really? The only time I hear anyone bring up Steve Bartman, its from a fan of a team that hates the Cubs. Any rare time I hear about him from a Cubs fan its been mostly pity for what he went through in the heat of the moment or its in response to his name being brought up again (like when Kaminsky wore that Bartman jersey to the United Center and thought he was so funny). There were some idiots that treated him like horsefeathers that night but I feel like most of the Cubs fans who were idiots were over it within a few days. Doesn't make their behavior justified, but either way I haven't seen this scorn that you are speaking of.

There are 18 morons that yell out his name on every foul ball down the LF line.

Maybe it's just because I'm stressed at work today or I'm cranky from a lack of sleep but this actually pisses me off. Like most Cubs fans, I stopped blaming him within days of losing Game 7 but this is just horsefeathering stupid. He doesn't deserve a WS ring.
