Maybe it's just because I'm stressed at work today or I'm cranky from a lack of sleep but this actually pisses me off. Like most Cubs fans, I stopped blaming him within days of losing Game 7 but this is just horsefeathering stupid. He doesn't deserve a WS ring.

i wonder if he has made his way unnoticed to a cubs game at some point in the last 14 years (i'm thinking probably not)

If he went dressed up in any outfit but the one he wore to the playoff game there is no way anybody would recognize him. Throw a bryant shersey on him with khaki shorts and he's 75% of the fan base.

that's what i figure

but he also seems really introverted (for what little we know about him - which is essentially 14 years of complete silence publicly) and i could see him wanting to distance himself from ground zero entirely.

What if he posts here?

He didn't deserve to have his life ruined for trying to field a baseball in 2003, but you didn't get to decide that either.

This is a mostly private way for the Cubs to make a restitution, and it didn't prevent the team from any baseball operations. It's a marketing move, and though it's a weird thing to do, it's been a weird thing for 15 years, so it's a form of closure for everyone involved.

Make up your mind. Is it a mostly private gesture or a marketing move? It can't be both.

Actually, it can and is; it's a public gesture by the organization to basically say, "we're sorry for everything you went through" and it's private for Bartman in that he doesn't have to be paraded out for some kind of ceremony. It's win-win for both sides that way.

Yeah, I think he definitely deserves something. I'm fine with him getting a WS ring and it's not even in the same class of WS rings as the player's WS rings (most valuable) for obvious reasons.

He had to put up with a lot of crap, and from all accounts is a good dude, introverted and is an extremely loyal Cubs fan. He's had to endure a lot of abuse on sports talk radio/ESPN, and from fans of other teams. The media keeps bringing him up when all he wants is privacy. I forgave him a long time ago, and honestly there were so many fans around him reaching for the ball as well. Like the old saying goes "wrong place at the wrong time". The Cubs did so many things wrong in that series in 2003. Why don't fans or people in the media bring up A. Gonzalez and how he messed up? Dusty Baker and his poor managing/decision-making? I don't even know if M. Alou catches that ball honestly.

S. Bartman had to put up with so much crap over the years, and I'm happy for him. I'm glad the Cubs did something like this. I hope he can go to a game and fans will leave him alone, if they actually recognize him.

This was a classy move by the Cubs. Now, I just hope idiot fans and the sports media at large stop bringing up his name and move on. No one mentions B. Buckner in association with the Red Sox anymore. Same thing should happen for S. Bartman. Let the man be a regular fan again.

I don't really care if he got a ring or not. It upsets me what he had to go through. And I'm glad he got the weight off of his shoulders. The scapegoating afterwards was horrible, and it was a terrible reflection upon our society. But, I just don't care if he got a ring or not.

However, Tim Federowicz got a World Series ring, too. And he "deserves "one just about as much as I do. So I don't see why anyone would possibly be upset about Bartman getting one.

this is so horsefeathering weird.

it definitely is, but his life was impacted in such a negative way...at least he gets something awesome out of it in the end.

Yeah; it's the weird resolution (hopefully) to a weird situation that the poor guy got WAY too much horsefeathers over. Still plenty of meatballs that look at him as some kind of villain or figure of scorn, and since he very understandably doesn't want to be a part of something like throwing out a first pitch, this seems like a good way to publicly give a little something back to a guy who didn't deserve any of the awfulness he's gone through.

I'm not sure I know anyone who blames him. I feel the meatballs don't blame him. It only seems like his named lived on because of Fox and ESPN.

The fans were a-holes to him for sure, but had the local media not staked out his house and made him into a sensation, it probably would have blown over pretty quickly

Don't forget the Sun-Times.

Most sports fans are idiots. The Cubs have one of the largest fan bases. The amount of "oh, but not US" over this is...humorously BFiB-like.

To the extent that Bartman deserved any blame at all, it should have been absolved the moment Alex Gonzalez decided to play soccer instead of field that double play ball.

The fact that the press staked out his house - or that we even know his name, for that matter - is inexcusable. Why did they freaking publish his name? What did that serve?

While the press deserves the lion's share of the blame for what happened to the guy, had the Cubs pulled their heads out of their asses and pulled off a win in game 6 or even game 7, Bartman's name would have been forgotten and all would have been fine. I figure that the WS ring is as good an apology for the Cubs' part in the matter as you could expect.

i cant imagine giving one horsefeathers either way about this or what the cubs do or dont do with their world series rings

You got me; I completely made it up for no reason whatsoever.

Both right. 1% idiots in a 10 million+ fanbase is still a 100,000 idiots. Plenty to ruin a guy's life.
