hey why were the bears in a situation where the #2 overall pick in week 4 of the preseason in a 25-0 game was getting sacked?

Because Fox is a moron. Shaw got hurt, Trubisky had to come back in(no idea why Sanchez didn't play BTW). And he calls a pass on the last play of the game.

Because Connor Shaw got hurt. Oh and apparently are run by idiots. Trubisky came into the game after Shaw got hurt (twice actually) because he's the only other QB who dressed. And the Bears decided to let him throw the ball on 4th down instead of attempting a FG (ya know, with a new long-snapper and a highly drafted kicker they recently picked up).

I read on twitter that Sanchez was fully in uniform on the sidelines.

Just a weird weird night all around. A bunch of head scratching decisions by the Bears coaching staff.

after mitch came out i figured i could stop flipping to make sure he didn't get hurt

i am not sure i've ever been as confused as i was when i read the tweets about him getting sacked on the last play

Honestly, what do you have to lose? This isn't a Lovie situation where the players loved him. This isn't even a Trestman situation where the playbook goes out the door with him. I don't think there are any players worthwhile that are closely tied to him and would miss him. Loggains and Fangio stay. Make Fangio the head coach. Make Donatell DC. Loggains keeps calling the offense, and let him make the QB decision for Week 1.

yeah, I think Fangio is the next HC of this team anyway.

I theoretically hate the idea of trying to force a DC on a new HC like we did with arians/marinelli, but I'd much rather hire someone offensive minded and retain fangio as DC. fangio doesn't really strike me as HC material either. hell, i'm open to the idea that loggains might be a competent coach after the way he made a couple shitty QBs look decent last year (moving the ball...shitty QBs and shitty skill players aren't going to get you in the end zone much no matter how well you scheme) and I have liked how he has called plays in the preseason (well prior to the bizarre things that happened yesterday but yesterday's game is meaningless)....all of that is to say i think i'd rather see loggains elevated to HC than fangio, but i reserve the right to determine that a few months from now.

but yeah, option a is hire someone else altogether and i'd love if they could pull off keeping fangio around. would love payton.

I'd have to agree. If Loggains runs a good O this year, especially if it's with Trubisky running it a good chunk of the time, might as well just promote him right on up.

If Loggains continues to look average, just start the slate clean, even if you lose Fangio as DC in the process.

The other names on that graphic make me think being on the graphic doesn't mean all that much.

well, a - it's just one stat... like looking at obp on it's own without looking at slg. it's not like it's some all encompassing composite performance metric.

and b - yes, obviously, preseason stats are meaningless, especially against the competition he mostly faced, but it's still cool to see the trait everyone raved about him translate directly into his performance to the point that he was the best of any qb

No no no no no no

Looking at this stat is nothing like looking at OBP on its own w/o SLG.

when i made that post, i had no doubt in my mind that you'd make this exact reply.

the point is that there's a lot more that goes into how good he is and how bad those guys (sans jameis) are than just the one stat. it's not a catch all and neither is obp. obviously, outside that basic common relationship (that it's only one aspect and not a composite measurement of performance), OBP is much more a corollary aspect of being a good baseball player than this completion percentage is for a QB. but the point is while those guys may have been very accurate, they still could've been garbage by throwing a bunch of 2 yard passes to achieve it, while mitchell was making throws of a pretty high degree of difficulty.

(for the record, there are occasionally extreme cases where a baseball player will have a good obp and still be horrendously shitty. see jeff blauser 1998. nobody remembers that he still managed to have a .340 on base that year.)

edit - (no idea where i was going with that "people are" in the quote below lol)

if you lead the league in OBP you are badass. If you have a .340 OBP on the 98 Cubs you have the 6th highest OBP on a slightly above average team.

now i'm curious as to what the worst season has been by a guy with a very high OBP in a significant amount of plate appearances. i bet jose offerman is up there somewhere.

i wish i could tag TT in this post since there's just about no chance he comes in here on his own

haha wow. awesome. thanks.

and the worst .400 obp season by fWAR would be nick johnson's 2009...1.6 fWAR in 133 g with a .426 obp

Wow...today in Time Makes Fools of Us All, we see Ken Griffey horsefeathering Jr occupy 2 of the top 3 spots on this list of the most useless good offensive seasons of all time. Maybe Roger Dorn had a point with his fear of diving.

Looking just at offensive production:

Bears release Victor Cruz.

Probably because they just have too many receivers

He didn't do anything to stand out, even amongst our rag tag group. I think we could find better production after cuts. Failing that, I'd rather develop Gentry or Davis.

please just admit right now that you had no idea who jordan howard was when you made that post

and yes the one dude who said that 20 year thing represents everyone in this thread

As the dumb dude who mentioned 20 years I'll just say that anyone who read my post and interpreted it that way is about as dumb as the guy who is ready to crown his as the savior of the franchise based on 3 preseason games.

I have a lot more than 3 preseason games. I was hyping him long before the combine.

His pocket awareness, his release, his ability to run. The fact that when his head moves, his feet don't, and he keeps both feet beneath him when he throws. He's the deal.

and i'm the guy that absolutely loathes the tar heels (and nc state DID beat UNC/Trubisky last year) and i was/am singing his praises.

but, i've never been anything but impressed with him. they lost to NCSU in spite of him not because of him (it irritates me so much when QB's are judged by W/L records of an extremely team sport but i'll digress).

i hate the tar heels so much that i didn't want him to be so good. but from watching him i could tell he really was something special. i mean i've not been pitching in on this thread all that much bc i'm not a bears far. but if a tar heel does well enough that i can't even hate him but i respect him then he's pretty gd good.
