Both, in a way. He wasn't THAT highly ranked, from what I remember. Maybe top 100ish or so? With a bonus in the 500-700k range? Too lazy to look it up.

there were articles indicating he was some kind of neuroscience scouting experiment, and one quote from when he was in the minors something like "if this guy pans out, you'll know there's something here"

didn't theo & co. rate him much more highly than other teams because he aced the neuroscouting tests that they were just beginning to implement at the time?

He wasn't a BA top 200 prospect but he was Tennessee's top recruit and got a $750k bonus.

it was talked about in the Verducci book, too, actually. i wasn't sure how other teams felt about him, but i know he flew up the red sox list with those tests. the book also talks about how he had a stronger reputation as a bowler than a baseball player.

Pardon me as I dont follow the amateur rankings a ton, but is the 1B from Iowa - Adams- going to be picked or has he already? Any reports or him?

I don't know anything about him, but he's ranked 296 by BA. So he'll get drafted. Likely today.

Thanks! I hadn't seen any hype about him draft wise, Tillo being the only guy from around here being talked about really.

MLB #134 prospect:

A highly decorated high schooler who won gold medals with Team USA's 16-and-under and 18-and-under squads, Thompson was a top-five-rounds prospect in 2013 but went undrafted because he wanted to play at Auburn. He starred as a two-way player as a freshman but injured his elbow the following spring and had Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for all of 2016. After turning down the Tigers as a 33rd-rounder last summer, the redshirt junior has looked as good as ever on the mound this spring. Since his high school days, Thompson's best pitch has been his plus curveball, which features good depth. He usually works in the upper 80s with his two-seam fastball and the low 90s with a peak of 95 with his four-seamer, though his heater gets flat at higher velocities. He also has solid feel for a changeup. Thompson throws strikes with all his pitches and scouts have noted that he's more mature as a pitcher now, focusing on getting outs and not worrying as much about velocity. As a polished college pitcher who's already 22, he'll get the opportunity to advance quickly in pro ball. Teams will have to balance his track record of success against his medical history, which also includes a missed start this spring with shoulder tendinitis.
