Per Merosi, if Verlander is traded he will be able to opt out after this season, and same for next year if he's traded in the offseason

First I'm hearing of that

I thought the report was that he's allowed to discuss and seek an opt out clause with the acquiring team (not that he just automatically has it) in exchange for waiving no trade rights

I didn't really look too hard at it

Ok, I just saw someone post the tweet. I need clarification now.

i mean assuming he doesn't just absolutely hate the city/team he's traded (it would obviously be a contender so a good team) why in the world would he want to opt out? He's not going to get paid more money than what he's scheduled to get paid (which seems obvious considering he cleared waivers)

well, if he lights up the rest of this season and wins somebody a world series title he could get paid more.

counterpoint: get paid a ton of money for a shorter amount of time and spend your retirement sleeping with kate upton

I wouldn't be surprised if he is trying to get the 2020 option to be automatically vested in exchange for waiving the no trade clause.

Yeah guessing it's an either/or, either he'll waive the NTC for being able to be a FA right now/end of year he's traded or his 2020 option is picked up. He's owed $56 million over the next two years, I have a hard time seeing him getting much more on the open market if he's a FA this offseason. Maybe 3/65 is but that's way pushing it and a pretty big gamble on his part to not take the $56 guaranteed.

one of the national guys yesterday (maybe heyman?) had reported that a non-Astros team was in on Verlander :beg:

CHICAGO (CBS) — Don’t close the door on the Cubs trading for Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander just yet.

Chicago and Detroit have remained in constant conversations about the 34-year-old Verlander dating back to early July, according to sources. With the playoff roster eligibility cut-off looming Friday, a deal would have to be made by the end of Thursday for Verlander to be eligible to pitch for the Cubs in this postseason. Beyond the pivotal next few days, the fact that both clubs are willing to still discuss a deal means those conversations could also be rekindled again in November when the offseason arrives.

The Cubs and Tigers are both continuing to evaluate minor league players who could be part of a potential deal, now or later, sources said. The Cubs have traded much of their top-tier talent in their farm system in the past year-plus, but there are young pitchers in Chicago’s system at Class-A and Double-A who interest Detroit.

Come the offseason, the Cubs would have the luxury of dealing players off their 25-man roster. For now, teams below the Cubs in the standings can put a claim in on big league players to prevent them from being used in a trade with another team like the Tigers. Past that, the Cubs would be reluctant to part with big league talent now in the middle of a pennant race anyway.

I was a Verlander proponent at the deadline, but with what's happened in the month since(seizing the Central, Hendricks and Arrieta look great), I'm not sure if there's a ton of benefit to adding him now. He's in good form, but you already have 90+% odds of the division, and in the playoffs you're bumping who, Hendricks? Quintana? As an Arrieta replacement in the offseason it makes more sense, and it's more likely the Tigers find an agreeable deal on their end.

i just figure if you can do it now, might as well.

having to figure out who to bump in the playoffs, if there's reason to actually have a debate over that, would be a good problem to have imo. quintana could keep sucking. lester could keep sucking. someone could get hurt.

I'm not even saying 'no, don't do it', because it's not like the assets they'd give up would change in value or be needed between now and the offseason. But it is pretty odd timing for the Cubs to have renewed vigor in pursuing him, right as Lester is getting confirmed healthy(if not yet MLB productive) and Arrieta/Hendricks pitching to 2016 form.

With Uehara,CJ,Strop not being as dominating in the second half, I wouldn't mind bringing Verlander on to be an Andrew Miller 2 INN RP type in the playoffs. Let him throw 8-10 innings in a series.

verlander would probably refuse to report to the team if the cubs tried to do that.
