I was a Verlander proponent at the deadline, but with what's happened in the month since(seizing the Central, Hendricks and Arrieta look great), I'm not sure if there's a ton of benefit to adding him now. He's in good form, but you already have 90+% odds of the division, and in the playoffs you're bumping who, Hendricks? Quintana? As an Arrieta replacement in the offseason it makes more sense, and it's more likely the Tigers find an agreeable deal on their end.

With Uehara,CJ,Strop not being as dominating in the second half, I wouldn't mind bringing Verlander on to be an Andrew Miller 2 INN RP type in the playoffs. Let him throw 8-10 innings in a series.

verlander would probably refuse to report to the team if the cubs tried to do that.

I mean, probably? But maybe he wants to win a World Series or something. Might as well ask, right? I like the idea.

If we trade for him, he might be the best starter on the team.

I'm not sure what I'd do if we were to add him, as far as the post-season rotation. But I still want this really badly. As TT said, the assets aren't going to change very much. And it's something that would make sense after the season. And our fortunes look a lot better now and it's still doable later. So we've got all that covered.

Count me in on doing it now, though. You just never know. Give me the insurance against Lester having a setback or Quintana struggling or whoever else going down. If everything goes well and we have to bump one of them, we'll figure that out then.

Plus, whoever goes to the pen -- Quintana? -- could become a multi-inning asset, much like Monty. Just skip over all the rest of the flotsam in the pen and go to the multi-inning guy as the only bridge to Davis. Not the worst outcome.

What gets it done, hypothetically? Would we trade Caratini or Zagunis or go with players not on the 40 man who would be candidates to be added?

It basically had to be guys not on the 40 man.

They can have any combination of the pitchers they want for all I care because TINSTAAPP and they are all so far away

My understanding is any player on the 40 has to pass through waivers to be traded so you're looking at guys like Alzolay and such who would head the deal.

brewers seem to be prospect clutching right now and almost certainly won't be taking on all of his salary, so.

astros seem like a strong possibility, maybe the yankees? rangers (maybe more for the next couple seasons than this one)?

Is there a deadline? 5:00 EST? Midnight?

99% sure it's Midnights EST, needs to be on the roster before Sept 1 to be postseason eligible

radio is acting like it's 3pm central like the other deadline, but i don't think that's right

trades can still happen even into september. to be eligible for the playoffs, a player needs to be in the organization by september 1. so the deadline would technically be midnight, i believe.
