Holy horsefeathers

So much for not really wanting to play in Philadelphia. He is now a Phillie for life

25.4 per year...or put another way Brandon Kintzler plus Cole Hamels plus .4 million

Horsefeathers Theo just as much as Tom

Now think about what Russell is making

Chatwood + Duensing + Descalso + Russell + Kintzler = $25.9M. That's 5 guys that will have pretty negligible value this year and you could still have Hamels.

(BTW, I will cop to being all in favor of signing Chatwood, although it quickly became apparent over last offseason that the Cubs could have waited and signed him or someone very like him for quite a bit less.)

If this is the contract, then Boras/Harper screwed up by passing on the Nationals reported offer (10/300) and the Nationals rumored offer (higher than that). Yeah, he sets a record, but Machado ended up with a higher AAV, and if there's no opt out, this is just a weird, weird ending to the Harper FA. Sure, he's going to a more competitive team than Harper, but it sure feels like the Nationals offer was better, so it feels like Boras, along with ... well, a lot of us, misread the market, but we don't have a client's future at stake.

This is just a bleh deal. Tbh, it's a pretty solid deal for the Phillies, outside of the latter years likely being a mess.

the no opts (by choice) is the bad thing for Bryce, 10/300 v. 13/330 i'm not sure is much of a mistake. It will depend how he is at 36, I doubt many if any players have earned 30 million in new contracts after age 36.

Surprised he didn’t get any opt outs in there.

Rosenthal is saying he didn't want an opt-out.

That doesn't make any sense unless it was to get extra money out of them. There's no reason to not want as much control as they are willing to give you.

Yeah, he probably didn't want one in exchange for the record contract. Which seems like a weird objective for him given that Trout is probably going to get a bigger one in a couple years anyway.

I like this better because without Hamels you're still paying smyly 7 million.

But when I say I like this better, be sure you understand that only means I hate it less, because I hate everything and always will beginning today.

The only reason he signed with Philly was because MLB The Show backed him into a corner and was like "horsefeathers pick a damn team, we gotta print these horsefeathering sleeves by next month"

This is an interesting deal. On one hand, part of the allure of being able to sign a good player in his prime is that you can do a long-term contract and not have to pay for shitty years. Going to 13 with full NTC doesn't really get there.

On the other hand, the AAV gives the Phillies a lot of flexibility in the prime years.

At least he's not a Dodger and at least it spreads out the talent in the NL East.

i cant believe there's no opt outs. there's gonna be a strike and then a new cba and $25 mil is gonna be next to nothing. Imagine if LeBron had signed a decade long 25m a year contract before the last CBA, he'd be passing up on $15 million per year. Just insane.

as ssr has pointed out several times, the sad truth is that picking up hamels’ option instead of signing harper makes perfect sense once you realize we also have no money for next season.

this organization in no way deserves our attention.

13 year deal with no opt outs seem bad for both Harper AND the team

Harper passes on the chance to get a second contract in his early 30s, the Phillies pass on a chance to not have to pay this dude when he's 39 years old

Bizarre

True; 3rd is WAY too optimistic.

I would not be surprised if he didn't want one because he didn't want that potential decision hanging over his head. Baseball people have been talking about his pending free agency for three years. He hit his free agency at a very young age, went through the process, probably hated it to an extent, and is happy to give up the opt outs for the shot at the record contract.

So Zobrist and Heyward both played the same day the Bryce agreed with the Phillies? Maybe whatever the Cubs were trying to do fell through and they said "Sorry Bryce".

Sorry forgot to take this damn tin foil hat off!

Teams should always be happy to be in the top 5. Not everyone can be #1.
